Having to have a rest week

(sigh) Having graduated last week common sense has had to prevail and I'm taking a rest week with a physio appointment later this week :( though I did manage 40 mins on the cross trainer without any subsequent discomfort. Can't wait to get out on the road again though ....

What do other recent graduates do for weeks 10, 11 and 12?

I did the US version Simon, but apparently your version advises resting for a week or three weeks? I would definitely trust the programme that got you to the Graduation table but I just kept on running three days a week and working on continuing to build up to 5K - I could do the 30 minutes but not the distance. I did sign up for the 5 to 10K programme but I basically am now just running the distances that push me a bit. I can do 5K in 40 minutes on a good day, and now am gradually building up to where 2.8 miles - four laps of my park - is the foundation of the rest. I am not going for speed at all really, just stamina and distance. So I figure two 'short' runs of up to 5K per week and then one a bit futher - 3.5miles this week and then maybe add a tenth of a mile next week etc. :)

Hope all goes well with the Physio - and take it easy Pal, you have come a long way literally and metaphorically so don't blow it now :)

Thanks John, that helps. I'd like to work up to 5k (however long it takes) so thought about going right back to W1R1 and trying to push on a bit faster in the run minutes and slow down in the walk minutes. Sorely tempted to go out tonight ... foot feels better but I reckon it'll be totally better come Thurs when I'm due to visit the physio/osteo! So that'll be money wasted ..."Ah, it's fine now thanks" "That'll be £50, thank you!". Perhaps some gentle jogging might just give meaning to the Thursday appointment ;)

The 5 to 10k version I have starts off again with intervals, which surprised me, but by the time I downloaded it I was already up to the forty minutes or so of the W4. It basically takes you to an hours running and I figured that a) I won't be running 10k in an hour anytime like soon - let alone the eight weeks or whatever it said and b) I can basically keep it light and loose and fun, set a 'minimum' distance for myself and then either go for more distance or see how far 'speed' will take me. It keeps it fresh without being too haphazard and I keep that basic 5K foundation so I don't start slipping or getting too clever about it all. If I feel great - I run longer. If I don't - at least I am now doing a minimum of four laps (2.8 miles) and usually can push on to the full 5K (3.1 miles). I set three laps as the minimum shortly before graduation and this week decided my stamina is higher now so four laps will be my marker. Kind of scary though - you really do feel a bit 'lost' after graduation :)

Yep - My first target is 5k and then maintain that a few times each week until I can do W9R3 but using 5k as the stopping point not 30 mins.

A rest week won't do any harm, as you've been going well. Then consolidate some 30 min runs 3 times a week, and as you go on and as you feel comfortable try to go for 5k, it should come if you keep chipping away, have a go at Parkrun's as well😊

Thanks all. Slowly getting back into it, just 4k@30mins, though still got the aches and pains in the right foot :(
