Shin splints

Has anyone had problems with shin splints? This is the second that I've nearly reached the 5k but have developed shin splints in the final few weeks. I've had to stop as even walking was an issue for weeks after.

Yes, I got them in week 2, so painful aren't they. Mine was due to not having good shoes, and went away as soon as I bought some proper runners. If that's not the case for you all you can do is Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

I had them when I did C25k and I got proper gait analysis, new shoes and never had them since....

Don't know whether they are shin splints as such but my weak area seems to be my shins even after a year of running. I had a gait analysis but I think they seem worse if I lengthen my stride or run too fast. Landing with your foot under your body not out in a front of you is supposed to help.

Apart from reasonable shoes (don't go crazy and spend a fortune) it really helps to spend a couple of minutes doing calf stretches before you start your warm up walk. Put your hands on a wall or table and move feet away, keep one foot flat on ground with a straight leg and other leg slightly bent until you feel stretch and then repeat on other side. Don't overdo stretch. Lots of diagrams pictures etc if you google calf stretch.

Yes I used to have shin splints very badly. I googled and found and article from Running Magazine. The advice was to take a shorter pace. I did this and haven't had a problem since.
