Treadmill & Hello to Gordon the Garmin.....

Well it was still bit too ice around here today... so decided to have a plod on a treadmill that I get access to now and then.... 6k done... that's better :-) Still cant get over the difference to being outside... did that in 35mins... still cant do 5k in that time outside.

Then... yesterday my normal watch fell apart and will probably cost a bit to fix.... so treated myself to Gordon the Garmin (forerunner 10).... I think we are going to be very happy together :-) I did look at other models, but to be honest, this one had all I needed and I can use it as my normal day to day watch.

Looking forward to my first test run with it. Until now I have used RunKeeper to log all my runs, not sure whether to now use the Garmin site to log all my runs and transfer previous runs over... or the other way around... advice welcomed

Hope everyone else is coping with this cold spell ok... not seen any snow yet down here in Somerset.

I'm afraid I abandoned runkeeper once I got my garmin - prefer the garmin site. I didn't think about transferring my run keeper runs over - would be interesting to hear if it's easy to do.

Didn't want to risk any injury and I'm also in an area full of hills for the next few days... couple of good treadmill reasons :-)

Hi Andy :D that is pretty good going dreadmill or not :D i am still using runkeeper on my mob but have been considering a Garmin , Very interested to see how you get on :D

Sounds like an execellent run on the treadmill. And far, far healthier than not running, and also far healthier than being in bed with a broken collar bone. So well done you!

Like you I started with Runkeeper, and then eventually got myself a Garmin. I've been using them in parallel for quite a while, but am going to finally dump Runkeeper for New Year - what a liberation it'll be to not have to double up on the tracking :)

Hope you and Gordon have many happy outings together.

Have you used them both at the same time on the same run? That should give a pretty good picture of the accuracy of both and the differences between them.

I have indeed, on quite a few occasions. Sometimes Runkeeper quotes a longer route (i.e., it appears to have me jumping from one side of the road to the other all the time more), and other times they are in agreement within hundred meters or less. Runkeeper never quotes shorter than Garmin.

It feels like the Garmin is better at tracking accurately in built-up areas or when running on a tree-lined road. Out on the open country side they appear to be very similar.

The reason is probably that the GPS receiver in the phone is of a poorer quality than the one in the Garmin. So in "perfect" conditions it tracks just as well, but when the conditions become more challenging, it seems to be less accurate.

Thanks for the replies... going to use both for a few runs to see the difference (hopefully none) and I'll report back. Will hopefully move over Garmin to log my runs in the future... just playing with some software now to import all my previous RunKeeper activity to Garmin.... i'm such a geek :-)
