I bought a Garmin Forerunner 10 which arrived on Saturday and it does everything I need - and it's the cheapest. I didn't feel I needed one with a heart rate monitor, so this entry level one is perfect for me.

FR15 for me. Same functions as the 10, but with the addition of a step counter module. So I wear it all the time as a watch and count my steps as well. It has the option of adding a HRM, but I haven't bothered.

Thanks gingernut and aj - the full post I thought I posted explained that I want to know distance and pace - but I'm not hugely into technology - I'm the kinda person that uses two cycles out of 25 on the washing machine - so I don't think I want something hugely complicated but I didn't just want to go for a 10 to always wish I'd had a function on the next one up! 620 I think is beyond me.
