Welcome to week 6 of the Bonkers for a Bank Holiday Quest.
Hello and welcome to the last week of our little Quest.
I can't believe another six weeks has gone by. I find myself looking back at all the quests and realising that I have been part of every one, like many of you on here. Even when I was ill I still kept things up during the six week period. It is the longest I have constantly exercised without major breaks in my whole life. I definitely know it has helped me to focus on these six week periods. I find it less daunting to break things down into little sections.
On Friday I will put a post up for the distances for anyone who would like to add theirs and then I will do the virtual run post on the Tuesday along with the new Quest post. The extra day is for our runners in Scotland in case they want to partake of a long run On Their bank holiday weekend.
The new quest is a little indulgent. I hope you don't mind. It's going to be called
The Tri-ing to succeed Quest . As I will be undertaking. My baby triathlon on the 31 august and I really need all the psychological help I can get. The new quest will run until the 14 September.
What the quest is:-
The quest takes six weeks. You can join any time within that six weeks.
The main aim of the quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.
I ask that you will be a graduate or about to graduate to join the quest. The main reason I ask this is that while you are doing the program your plan is very structured so I wouldn't want the quest to interfere with that.
Most popular goals are:-
To run three times a week
To slowly increase distance
To train for a specific race
To add In Stretch and strength exercises
As you can see they are personal to yourself and it's totally your own choice.
Every week I will pin a new post where all the members of the quest can talk about how things are going.
So if you wanted to join all you have to do is put
I would like to join the quest, or count me in and then I would like to. ..............
Your name will then be added to the top post and every week your name will be in the quest until the end.
At the end, only for those that would like to, we each put out longest run of the quest and it is then marked on a virtual run we are doing from John O Groats to Lands End.
Then it all starts again for another six week Quest.

Had a really good training week this week. What a difference a week makes. It was such a good week so I topped it off with my second park run on Saturday. I was supposed to be going with my mate but unfortunately her work got in the way and she had to cancel at 7.50am Saturday morning. I was proud of myself as I went anyway. I was expecting my time to be a lot slower as I was sure she egged me on a lot the last time. I was so surprised to see my time was slower by 26 seconds. So now I have my own park run time. happy running to everyone.
It sounds like things are going really well for you at a training level. I hope it continues for you - you've definitely had a difficult few weeks. Well done for remaining so positive through out.
Well done on your second Parkrun Rfc, the nicest thing about Parkrun is you can go along alone and not feel out of it the atmosphere is so friendly, I did my 21st on Saturday, a little slower than last like you but it was so hot I think we all did well just to do it.
Got three runs in last week for the first time in ages (running group, a lone 10k and parkrun), finding the heat a challenge but much better than the winter winds. Thinking hat on for my aims next quest, all my best wishes for your triathlon, really looking forward to reading about it.
* Tuesday a nice 30 minutes with the News Quiz podcast for company, just to prove I could still do it after a week's layoff
* Thursday an enjoyable Speed session
But I think I ate something that disagreed with me on Thursday night, and that in turn triggered my labrynthitis symptoms. So Saturday's planned run turned into a long lie, and I didn't feel up to it Sunday either.
Feeling perkier today, and its overcast, so will try another gentle half hour to see how I get on. We are travelling Friday evening to spend 2 weeks with family in the North of England. Will pack my stuff, but its hilly round their way which will be a challenge. My neices and nephews are "proper runners" (as in half marathon types...) so I will be asking advice for some nice easy routes ! Thinking I might need to go back to run/walk intervals, but it might be a good opportunity to try some hills...
I'm still running 3 times a week in training for a 5 k race at the end of August. Training is going well and I've not missed any runs. Yay! Feeling good and positive. Well up for it
Had a mixed week of training last week. I was taken on a 'short' bike ride by a friend which turned into 26 miles! So only 2 run/jogs last week. On Friday, being my normal run/jog day, turned into a day out with late return home so no running/jogging then either on to Saturday, after not much happening in work I decided I would try and get some jogging/running in. Waited for dinner to settle turns into half 9, just set my foot outside the front door and the rain starts! Not going to be my week! But actually it turns into my best jog for a while, until my iPod runs out of battery and I have to complete my jog without music. I don't have any gadgets, so map my jog/run when I get back, to find I had actually complete 6.02km! So really was my best
Had good week Hurrah! Great time at park run as met up with Wilmacgh , lizziebeth 57 and debs and then back to Wilma's for lovely BBQ including pancakes - magic .Ran with lizziebeth and can't believe it as we talked quite a lot on way round but still managed 1 min faster than I've been doing for months - struggled with breathing at bits but Beth kept me going . My daughter is new c25k graduate and was doing parkrun too so lovely when my 3yr grandson was clapping as we ran passed
At running group last week I even managed couple of fastish ' sprints' -still prob really slow compared to other people but leader is always saying you shouldn't compare yourself with others so I'm claiming them as sprints! I don't think I have ever ran that fast before And he says my technique has improved greatly - how chuffed did that make me feel .
Yay, sounds like good fun - was thinking of you & sending positive vibes as I walked back from Parkrun on Saturday.
Definitely listen to your coach, I was second last in everything at my group session last night but they are younger and fitter than me and that's plain fact - we can only ever be our best, we can't be someone else's.
Mixed week for me: two good runs, yesterday was my second ever under 30min 5k.
On a personal note, I discovered that my family record of heart trouble continues. Mum's eldest brother died of a heart attack in Jan, 15 years after his quadruple bypass, and her younger brother, who was the heathy one, had a bypass 4 years ago. This follows from her dying of a heart attack at 57 and her little brother having an attack in his early 40s. Not much hope for me then!!
That's worrying, folkieboater, and I'm sorry to hear about your family history. Hopefully your care for your health will make a difference. Well done for your sub-30 min 5k - that's great!
Just got the one run in last week before the full force of the lurgy hit me.After a really rubbish weekend I am starting to feel much better and hoping to feel up to a run tomorrow morning.
Well done Rfc on getting that second parkrun under your belt ...especially going solo ...I think I would have wimped out there !
I've had a great week (can you tell from the way I've responded to everyone? ) because although I only ran twice, one was 4k and the other was - wait for it - 5k! Admittedly, it was in two halves: I did 2k, walked for a couple of minutes, then ran the other 3k, but I don't care. I know I can do it again now so I will focus on building up the stamina and getting back to that point.
Happy running everyone, but stay hydrated and safe in this heat
This week is my first proper week back running after illness. I don't know whether it's the heat, the illness or the fact I was relatively immobile for a week and a half due to the effects of the medication, but my recent runs definitely feel harder (I'm repeating the last week of runs before moving on with my b210k program). This week, I only have three runs planned/completed: 2x20minute (40 minute total) which I did on Sunday. This morning I did 4x14minute (60 minute total), and I'll repeat this one more time on Thursday morning. I then won't run again till Sunday due to family/work commitments. I think I need the rest days as being ill has definitely taken something out of me, and I'm not back to 100% yet.
Well last week was a bit of a roller coaster, first I threw a tantrum and just wanted to give up and then I ran the furthest I've ever gone. I didn't manage to do the discombobulated as intended.
This week has started with the sad loss of a cat and I have picked up a throat infection, so my one and only aim is to complete the discombobulated over a few days rather than my initial idea of just one day and all at very easy non taxing slower than a slow snails pace.
So just one run, one bike ride and one swim for me this week. And the possibility of making it to beginners yoga, unless life gets in the way again.
I've really enjoyed reading how everyone has got on, thank you. I agree that these short term goals are really helpful. In terms of running, I've mainly been resting on my laurels from the Discombobulated and strutting around in my HealthUnlocked t shirt which shows up my weight loss a treat. I did go out for a late afternoon run in the woods and was really pleased as it was still pretty hot. Have been doing lots of late evening walking for the dog's sake (not so hot) and then had our annual (well most years we used to have one) family holiday (thanks to benefit changes it was a single night rather than one week but we really made it count) Lots of walking then and today I have been in denial about the pain. I had put on running underpinnings but that was overambitious.... still got 9k to do to achieve my 25k goal and it would be better to do that in two or more runs rather than one.
I only did 2 runs this week. Would have done 3 but thought it was too hot on Saturday so wimped out. However I also did an 11 mile bike ride and a walk so quite a good week really!
Hey everyone! I had a good week last week. Did 3 runs, one of which was only 25 minutes because of the heat though. The week ended with the Parkrun with Fitfor60, wilmacgh and Deb54 and of course, the lovely brunch BBQ at Wilma's.
Unfortunately my thighs have been giving me a bit of trouble since then, just a bit achey along the outside, so i had an extra day off then ran yesterday. Thighs still achey today so I made sure to do my 20 minutes of IT band exercises this morning and I am committing to doing them every day this week and just doing a couple of very easy runs. Just to see how that goes.
I am also wondering how much of this is impacted by the lack of strength in other muscles. A physio once told me I had weak muscles at the front of my thighs so will be looking at exercises for that too. Fingers crossed I can catch it in time this time.
Sorry to hear about your sore thighs Beth You were running really well on sat Hopefully it'll settle down soon and not give you too much of a problem You def def don't want to be back on that couch
