Hi Sarah,
I don't have aching ankles but perhaps this might also help you. Do you wear proper running socks? They are made of a firmer texture than normal socks and give some support to your ankles. I always wear them because I want to avoid blisters but went out in normal socks a few runs ago. It really made a difference as my right ankle really felt instable and wobbly in the normal socks which is never the case in the running socks.
As I said, in my case it's not about hurting ankles but perhaps it helps you.
All the best for finding a solution for your ankles!
thank you nomoresloth! it sounds exactly what i need. I have wobbly ankles even with my running trainers however I always wear just normal socks! Will fish out some proper supportive running socks somewhere!
thanks for the advice!

As well as proper running socks, I sometimes wear a tubigrip support on my ankle when I feel it needs a little extra support - makes a bit difference.

Tubigrip or boots do elasticated ankle supports, I used to run with them in the early days.
