As the summer inevitably draws to a close, what would people suggest wearing for wet and/or cold running over the coming months?

Where we live gets really, really wet. Any advice would very welcome.

I found running gloves really help in the rain as does some form of long sleeve (I normally wear a long sleeved compression top under my running shirt on colder days). Rather unsurprisingly it's the front of your body that tends to take the biggest pounding from the elements.

Thanks for that. I have been eyeing-up compression 'stuff', and now I have a legitimate excuse. I may also get a wind proof top too.

layering up is crucial, base layer of compression clothing or running lycra top/bottoms this keeps heat agains body and draws sweat away from you slowing down how cold muscles get. The comperssion gear really helps circulation while doing exercise and can minimise injuries. have a slightly thicker layer above that and then the water/windproof top.... would say always aim to be too hot than cold. can always take a layer off.

just dont wear so much that it reduced range of movement.

This usually works with my athletics group.

decent cheap gloves and hats can be bought from poundland and they are just as good as anything else you can buy. plus if lost or ripped its not that much to replace and can usually be bought is pairs.

and most importantly of all the right attitude, know when enough is enough in harsh conditions. other than that game face on and go get a sweat on

Good point about the hat and gloves. My walking or cycling one are over the top for running, so I feel a trip to SportsDirect calling to get some Karrimor ones. Now, do I get yellow or black...?

I have also looked at the Ronhill Vizion(?) wind proof, which gets reasonable reviews ~ does anyone have any experience?

Ronhill is one of best from experience for windproof and running gear in general. If your out on the road get something high vis or reflective

Thanks. I try to avoid roads where I can, but they keep cropping up all over the place!

I will get the yellow as I can then do roads and off-road with one 'coat', and I may well end up running on roads more over winter :~(

I started in February and as I run at dawn it was quite cold at times.

I wore a compression top with long-sleeved running top over and compression shorts with long running leggings over. Compression stuff I got from Aldi and the other is New Balance.

Hands get cold, so I used a pair of lightweight thinsulate gloves I had in the car and they were perfect. Also a thinsulate beanie, which kept the ears warm.

I eventually bought a waterproof running top, which is good - very light and not too hot - but it has a hood which is a waste of space, as I can't get on with it while running. So when Aldi had their running gear recently I got a lightweight gilet which I hope will be better (in heavy rain I used to have to pour the water out of my sleeves before I took off the waterproof top....)

There seems to be a common thread of compression gear here. I shall pop-out and try some on.... Also, I will see about the Ronhill wind proof top this weekend ~ that's going to make the sun come back out!

I started in Feb too, and I wore fingerless gloves and a nice hat, then a long sleeved top and those tights things, that was warm enough for me, even in the snow. I borrowed my husbands cycling waterproof for the rain, but I found I was just as wet inside from sweat as it was outside. I need to invest in a decent high vis one...Oh and I wore a head torch as it was always dark when I ran.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

I tend to run hot at the best of times, so I shall try the long sleeved top with a short-sleeved tee on top; that way I can take the top off easily and carry it if necessary.

I will probably use long legs as I have slightly dodgy knees from triple-jump training in my younger days in the twelfth century. Best to look after them!

I tend to run after dropping my son at his school bus in the morning, so I may get away without a head torch for a good while. However, what a great opportunity to buy one.

Keep an eye of Lidl's website for running stuff. Also TK Maxx sometimes has real bargains.

Not what you're looking for?
