Oxygen at home

Hello,

I'm fairly recently diagnosed with Emphysema - last July and also have Graves Disease/Hyperactive Thyroid - 7th year.

It's possible that I've had Emphysema for longer than the diagnosis date because unfortunately being Hyper and with Graves causes similar symptoms - breathlessness when walking or exertion, fatigue, weight loss, etc.

I had already cut down on smoking before being diagnosed with Emphysema and have tried since then to quit completely. However, I have so far failed to quit but have cut down again from 10/15 cigarettes daily to around 5 daily. I don't smoke in the house and haven't for about 10 years.

After an appointment at the Oxygen Clinic last December it was ascertained that I do require oxygen at home - my oxygen level on arrival at the clinic was 98 but after a test of walking up and down the corridor my level dropped to 81 and then tested with oxygen and walking the level went back up.

An appointment for the 'oxygen' team was made for a home visit for 6th February.

My first question is:- what is the reason for a home visit ?

My second question is:- are there any members who are still smoking after diagnosis AND receiving oxygen at home ?

Many thanks in advance of your comments.

Hello and welcome to the site, if you are going to be on home oxygen then you won't be able to smoke for safety reasons. But that will all. Be explained when they visit. Please keep posting, have a lovely day and take care of yourself 😊 Bernadette xx

Hi Well done on cutting down cigarettes. I have COPD as well as Fibromyalgia, spina Bifida etc. Like you I still smoke but I do give it up for a few months/weeks and then start again. It’s very difficult especially if you have smoked for 44 years like I have. BUT I guess we just keep trying?? 😉 I never had a problem until I tried to give up by vaping which caused me to have breathing problems.

Good luck with the home visit. AND good luck with trying to stop the cigarettes 🚬. Xx Have a good day.

I also had a home visit. They wanted to see if they could help with any problems that might come up in the future for me. They also call me every once in a while to check on me. I am smoke free 7 years now. When I did smoke it was getting so hard to breath after a smoke I was able to quit
