Natural Approach to copd

I earned my spot here the hard way, left with 20 percent of my lung function after TB and smoking for years, saw dust and paint fumes. I was prone to pneumonia and had not a few hospitalizations. Yet I am doing well without conventional meds, havent had so much as a sniffle all winter,. I use only medicinal mushrooms, herbs, exercise and good food. Avoid Drs. Anyone else out there try this route?

Chronic conditions often cause the search for the magic bullet. There is far too much on eating you vegetable..some in ridiculous quantities, taking vitamins...minerals...phytothis or that...huge quantities of water...breathing things you cant even pronounce...etc etc the list is endless.

Best to follow the proven researched guidelines on diet and exercise, many of us don't even know them or even come close to following them, and relieve your symptoms by following medical advice.

Newfie1 in reply to Schmicter

Sorry, but medical advise was basically take this inhale that and carry around a tank while you wait to die. I simply searched the web and through trial came up with the things that worked for me. I take cordyceps, reishi, chaga, which I found while HIKING UP A MOUNTAIN, AMA. I also take NAC and make a home brew with ginger onions tumeric and raw honey. Nothing mysterious or hard to find, or expensive. If I feel a cold coming on, I drop some raw garlic in hot soup. Havent been sick all winter. You can achieve some healing through antioxident, anti inflammatory natural remedies. Just one hour of watching tv, all the pharmaceutical commercial, listing side effects should be enough to warn all against that route. It just leads to dependance and death. Have fun on your couch, I have a life to live.

Schmicter in reply to Newfie1

To each his own. I'm far from dying on my couch. I eat FOOD!..not junk, and so do you. Don't smoke and do more than the 150 minutes per week of moderate to high intensity exercise (hiit), and brisk walking at 5k in less than 43 minutes, resting heart rate at 62bpm. There is really nothing special about garlic, onions, turmeric, mushrooms...etc etc...it is FOOD.

Newfie1 profile image
Newfie1 in reply to Schmicter

Exactly, but it also has anti inflamatory, antioxident properties that offer relief from symtoms, while building your bodies own defenses as opposed to flooding your body with poison, mto mask symtoms without healing. These things don't come from a witch doctor and have been studied extensively. I have regained control of my body and feel good. After being diagnosed with TB (mysteriously aquired) I was on antibiotics for an entire year, was told my damage was worse then anything my dr had seen. After that, I developed pneumonia with every cold, had trouble tying my shoes, back to the hospital... the last time I felt it coming on and cleared it up at home, with my usual stuff and alot of RAW garlic. It is not just food, it contains many active chemicals.

garlic has in it's makeup asicillin which is in the same family of drugs amoxicillin and penicillin are in.

When feeling like hell I added garlic and cod liver oil to my daily buffet of heart meds. In 3 days my voice returned and people tell me I look like I'm doing much better than I was. Even my mood seems to be better. When I told my GP what I did he asked me why I didn't run to him to for an antibiotic. Garlic is a natural antibiotic as are onions. Cod liver oil is high in omega 3's, vitamin

A and vitamin D.

Note - the benefit in garlic is only in the oil in garlic. When crushed before eating it releases the cillin antibiotic. I skin a clove and cut it into pieces and swallow them without chewing as taking a pill then take a drink of water avoiding bad breath but getting the benefits.

I have read that turmeric should NoT be taken by anyone in blood thinners as it thins the blood more. Therefore dangerous. Don’t know about the other stuff but would ask for professional advise first as COPD could get worse if not treated.

I have been trying to, I use NAC, sulforaphane, boswellia Serrata. A multivitamin. I am still short of breath to out of breath to exercise. I quit taking Advair and Spiriva. I do still take blood pressure medicine and daliresp. They put me on Daliresp because I was going to the hospital every couple of weeks for a year. I haven't been back in four years so am afraid to get off of them.

Newfie1 profile image
Newfie1 in reply to Roessner541

I know that alot of the things I use, such as the garlic and fungus, have blood thinning properties, so if you are on medication for this, try them only with your Dr's consent, which I hate to say, but would not want to advise anyone into a bad interaction. I still get out of breath, but find being able to cough up the congestion helps. The ginger and tumeric tea helps, the honey, if you can handle it fresh horseradish. Sometimes the first few minutes of a hike are rough as my lungs start working, I cough a bit, then I'm better. Please look into the mushrooms, mespecially the cordyceps, reishi and chaga. Typical Drs will deny the benefits, being so indoctrinated by drug companies, but these things have been studied extensively and used for centuries.

Yes exercise makes you out of breath or short of breath. If you take it slow and easy, a little at a time and breathing heavy little longer once in awhile...you can improve.

I know that feeling very well, you are breathing, but the oxygen is not getting in, drowning. I make rustic furniture, spend alot of time stomping through the woods gathering materiels. So there I am, in the middle of nowhere, alone except for my dogs and I've over done it and the panic starts. I'm on a low dose of lorazapam (1mg per day) for that. I still have to stop and give my lungs a chance to catch up, but the paralyzing panic does not take over. Be kind to yourself, IT IS TERRIFYING, and untill I experienced it myself, never could have understood. We cannot let this rob us of what life remains. God Bless.

Where do I find cordecyps, reishii and chaga??

Newfie1 profile image
Newfie1 in reply to Mspatriot57

I get my Cordyceps from RGarden as I have used other supplements from them for years. The others can be found online, many sources, dual extract, not the cheapest is best. I've gotten chaga chunks from Maine, that I use to make tea, but I also find its prevalent in the Adirondacks, so I harvest my own. All can be foundcin capsule form. There are also blends, like Aloha Medicinals Immune Assist 24/7, which I happen to have now. Nothing hard and fast and I still jump around if I see something I want to try. Lots of info out there.

Thanks Newfie1 in sharing your success on a natural approach to treatments. I agree with you about Doctors and Medical industry. I'm also trying different types of natural approach. Can you give me the protocol recipe for what's working for you. It would be nice to have the amount needed, measurements etc...for the products you are using. The brand name would also be helpful for everyone.

My problem is chest congestions that's causing my symptoms.

Again, thanks for sharing.

Newfie1 profile image
Newfie1 in reply to sagittar

For fast help with congestion , I keep a mason jar with my concoction. Start with fresh ginger root, about 1/2 cup chopped, one onion chopped, add 4 cups water. Simmer untill reduced by half, then cool. Add A Tbsp of ground tumeric and raw honey to taste, strain into glass. Keep in fridge. Take a couple tablespoons, morning and night or when needed. I also find NAC to be very helpful, 600mg twice a day for keepingvmy lungs clear.

Thank you so much....I will give it a try. I also started on NAC. Would glove of garlic with your elixir help? I just ordered a product I'm going to try, if it works I will share it with the community. Keep sharing....hopefully everyone would share more of their success.

What is NAC?

Newfie1 profile image
Newfie1 in reply to Singhawk

NAC is N-acetyl cystiene from what Ive read is a precursor of glutathione a powerful anti oxident. It helps your body make it. It thins mucus and protects lungs from further damage. I believe it has had the most immediate effect on my ability to function, clearing my lungs so that I function almost normally. Where as the mushrooms build my immune system, protect me from pathogens and viruses. I wouldn't want to do without either.

What is NAC? I am considering trying the recipe as well. Wondering if that might help my pseudomonas flareups in my lungs. Can't live on antibiotics.

Garlic is most potent raw, thats very strong, so I find throwingit into a bowl of hot soup makes it bearable. The elixer is strong, hot also but doesnt make you stink. I likecto be ablecto control that when possible. I do sometimes add chaga or green or black tea to the blend andcthat improves the taste. Ultimately nothing will help if you can't tolerate it, so alter as needed. I hope it helps you.

Kember profile image

Newfie may I ask we're you at any time on the inhaler / corticosteroids seemingly endless wagon? I would stop them in a heartbeat if possible. I do take mushroom blend, NAC will make up your blend,,, bless you for sharing !

Newfie1 profile image
Newfie1 in reply to H2o1511

I was put on steriods, whilecin the hospital with pnuemonia, it made me crazy, actually signed myself out AMA, Then had to go back, but specify no steriods. Had some not breathing episodes when I got out, used the inhaler twice, then never again. I don't know about steriods and dependance, but if you can get your breathing clear you should be able to wean yourself off. I still have it in my cabinet, for emergency, but have not needed it.

Thanks, I'm certainly going to give it a shot. I live off grid / on island is Alaska. Have multiple situations that put me in jeopardy just to live out here. Like I skiff to town & skiff is on outhaul. These things of heavy exertion which I cannot avoid sometimes drop me to my knees. If I could just manage my lifestyle a bit easier I'm a happy girl !!

Thanks. I'll be traveling soon which is not desirable but need to see my mom ( 93), hope these can keep my immune system strong enough to battle all the germs in transit

Thanks again✌️

Wow, thats rugged, colder then the Adirondacks. I have a hard time breathing if its below 20. If you have any Birches out there, you probably have a source of Chaga, West Coast may have reishi also. Take care!

I got the flu, and well just didn't feel like taking the Forvent. I was feeling really down. I got better but after paying all the bills, I it was also time to go to the pharmacy to get my new Forvent script. Money was a bit tight and wanted to buy my daughter's something instead. Long story short, since I've stopped taking Forvent I have never felt better. I am by no means telling you to stop, but I genuinely do think that ever since I started taking Forvent I felt bad. It was a total downward spiral for me. Sore feet, depression, extremely tight chest, terrible fatigue. 2 months later and I was back! Running around for the first time in a year, swimming, laughing etc. Can't seem to help but think maybe I'm that 1% that maybe has a reaction to Forvent. All I know is that I will stick to being more active, have fun, take supplements like Four Gentlemen and QI-YIN, Ozone from time to time (probably because I like the owner more than anything) and of course no smoking.

I hear you, Im the type, that prior to my sickness I wouldnt even take tylenol, so all this stuff they wanted me to take, was about as attractive as cyanide. that and It made me feel weird. We know our bodies and need to stay in control of what we allow. Drs are not gods or parents to be obeyed, but to be in control we must educate ourselves about our options.

Hi Ive just bought some cordyceps in tablet form do u think it's better to start slow and just take one a day in stead of the recommended four to see if there ok and do they actually work willing to try anything

Newfie1 profile image
Newfie1 in reply to Southp

Its good to start slow with anything, give your body a chance to get used to it. I take cordyceps 500 mg once or twice a day, I also take Immune assist 24/7! Which is a blend of ddifferent mushrooms, also strongly recommend NAC as it has been very helpful in keeping my lungs clear. I brew my own Chaga tea, Some of which I found myself. My self treatment is fluid and changes as I learn more, so I wouldnt say cordyceps alone has given me relief, but all these things II've vresearched and tried have worked together to bring me towhere I am, which is a highly functional state. I believe these things restore ovrall health and help our bodies recover from damage. I dont buy into the COPD is progressive and iccurable, mthat it can only be manage with toxic drugs. I strongly suggest you search somecof these things yourself and try those things that address your concerns. Taken in moderation these things offer many healthful benefits, beyond COPD, so you have nothingvto loose. Check for drug interactions first, and dont expect your Dr to support your attempt at self care. Remember, what they offer us only treats the symptom but destroys the system. Better to heal the system (your body) and give it a chance to fight the disease. God Bless

Thankyou, for that Newfie. I've written down all you take n am going to try them. I have taken Steroid inhalers for many years n I'm unsure how much good they do me. If i have Chest infections i make a drink of: a clove of Garlic, Lemon n honey. It's a old remedy, used by my Gran, long before the days of the NHS. Both onion n garlic are natures antibiotics and have been used for Centuries. I also, eat pro n pre biotic foods n buy Organic whenever i can. Although i still have breathing difficulties, I've not had a bad Cold for years. So something's working. Best wishes to you. 😊🌻✌️

So please tell me how much has your lung function percentage gone up since you have been off the conventional meds ?

Newfie1 profile image
Newfie1 in reply to Kristicats

Honestly, I have not gone to a Dr since October, when I was in the hospital with pneumonia. Iit was innlow 80s at its worst, low 90s when I was released. I can tell by ability to function about where it is. Right now, no congestion , 98 or 99. I have some trouble in the morning, but as I move, ease into my day, take care ofvthe dogs run some laundry it generally clears up. The more active I am, the better. I have had no colds or serious symptoms, since fall. I can not say what is most helpful and I don't adhere to a strict regiment, but somethings working. I have just listed the things I use maybe they can help someone else.

Newfie1 profile image
Newfie1 in reply to Kristicats

Almost all of these remedies, garlic, mushrooms, tumeric have some blood thinning properties. My question then is why are so many compelled to take Exorbitantly expensive and dangerous drugs for that which could be aachieved naturally and safely

Kristicats profile image
Kristicats in reply to Newfie1

I am pleased if you think it all works for you. But would be interested to know if your lung function has increased

Newfie1 profile image
Newfie1 in reply to Kristicats

You must remember, I first suffered a severe case of tuberculosis. I was tested and xrayed and monitored to no end. I know what it feels like to not have the breath to stand, to walk to the bathroom, I know what it feels like to suffer a panic attack in the middle of a shower, because I can't breathe, to rest between articles of clothing getting dressed. I dont need a machine to tell me when I can breath. Most days I hike, hauling materials out of the woods for my work. I haul my groceries up the stairs for a familyvof five, maintain a house, rake my own property. Not as fast as I used to but certainly as well , if not better than most 51 year olds. I am in no way saying this to brag. I shudder to think what would have happened to my life, had I not taken control of my health. I be on an endless stream of steriods, inhalers, oxygen, my small business would be gone, we'd be bankrupt and all the things that I love about my life in the Adirondacks would be beyond me. Maybe Im just incredibly stubborn and that has healed me, whatever, then I recommend that too.
