COPD severe broncospasms?

hi everyone. My Ist time on site, I'm 56 (a non -smoker -last few yrs) I 've had severe copd bout 8 yrs. generally cope ok. Other night i knew was going down with infection and had lots sticky flem on chest, I awoke having 'back and chest spasms?' breathing was severely restricted. needed ambulance. im not on home oxyg.. my spo2 was low 80's(usally 90-92). after bout 2hrs at A&E(on O2) the 'spasms' slowly stopped. after 2 days with IV antibiotics and Oxygen my levels were up to high 80s (without O2) and i was allowed home. My concern is that none of the doctors treating me seem to know exactly wot my 'spasms?' were or what was causing them. 1 doc called them 'broncho spasms'. they started in my back causing me to strech my arms (like when yawning) which then locked up and my chest constricting violently. at thier worse were every 30-45 secs. My copd nurse seemed simalarly at loss to explain, saying only that very unusal. My fear is a repeat, compounded by having no explaination. I have no history of asthma. Anyone with simular experince or has any advice I'd be gratful to hear.
