It happens to me too ... I've choked and been afraid because of losing my breath so now I take very small bites and chew thoroughly before carefully swallowing

I too have this problem and have resolved it by eating a lot of home made soups, soft foods, like yogert, applesauce, pineapple and such. Make sure she is getting vitamins if possible. She has to eat to stay healthy...even Ensure or nutrient drinks. good luck

Thanks for the tips Valeriejean most helpful stay well regards Jan x

Also make sure she stays well hydrated. Older folks lose the sense of thirst, and become dehydrated, which only makes things worse.

Have her drink Premire Protein drink with ice cream at night if her diet will allow it. It provides 30 grams of protein and more vitamins and minerals than Ensure. The ice cream adds back the calories (it is a diet drink with only 5g of carbohydrates). It comes in many flavors and is delicious (especially with the ice cream). It is sold at Sam's and Walmart for a reasonable price. My 93 year old mother-in-law loves it as do I. (We both have to add weight constantly).

Smoothies would be a great idea for your mom. There are plenty of recipes online, buy a recipe book or check them out at the library. Avoid using too much sugar in her diet, that'll be doing her no favors.

That was happening to me for a long time I've went to ent doctors and my doctor they said it was sinus and causing sore throats then I went to a gastroenterologist and had a upper and lower G I done and my esophagus was closing and had some tears in it from acid reflux he repaired holes and lifted and opened my esophagus surgery took about 25 min never even had to have a pain pill it felt good to eat and swallow again you may want to go to a gastroenterologist and tell him about your throats I'm on oxygen as well but maybe your experiencing the same

Wish you luck get well soon
