Hi Jumka1,,

Thanks for posting with us. I really hate to hear you are having to go through this. So many things here shouldn’t be happening. Navigating the NHS is not an uncommon issue in this group or on this site. I hope others will chime in with some first hand knowledge on how to give you some direction.

First, I gotta believe the discharge notes are on record in a digital format that should be available to you. I’m in the US and my records are ALL on “MyChart”. I have access to test results before I even speak with my doctor.

The polyp … great question about why wouldn’t it be removed? Perhaps your colonoscopy was done with a scope that doesn’t have the ability to remove a polyp? I would also hope the Gastroenterologist took a biopsy? Maybe you’re waiting on histology? I can only speculate as you are having to do.

Is there a family history of cancer in your family? That would be a good reason to remove the polyp. BTW … what were the reasons for you getting the colonoscopy? Were there symptoms presenting themselves?

We do wish you the best. I know I’m just speculating about things the same as you are having to do. I do hope others can give some insight on getting your discharge directives.

Don’t let it go. You have to advocate for yourself.👍💪❤️❤️

Hi Jumka1,

Have you been able to get some of the information you’re looking for?

Hi Amber, as in the other answer it's difficult to offer an opinion on the decision making for not removing a polyp, but there is a lot of explanation of colonoscopy outcomes from the bowel cancer screening programme. Why you went for a colonoscopy and how you were referred are important bits of information. Moving on to how to backtrack the information. However you were referred, screening or via your GP a medical note of the outcome would have been sent to you and your GP. Given the relative recency of this event, if you haven't changed GP's you can access that record. If you are internet aware the information should be visible to you on the NHS app or sometimes the GP practice use a version of the NHS app eg Airmid. In your GP record on the NHS App the hospital letter would be either stored as a Document, Consultations or Test results.

The document will also be held by the hospital where the colonoscopy took place.

If I were concerned and maybe suspect I have some relevant symptoms I might go back to my GP ask them to review the note and perhaps refer me for a further colonoscopy. Or explain why that might not be necessary.

I tested positive on my most recent bowel cancer screening test last November. So was referred for a colonoscopy. Two polyps were found, removed and sent for biopsy. Thankfully they were benign. However, in the waiting for the colonoscopy, I had talked myself into thinking some day to day discomforts that I had put up with might be relevant so I was quite anxious. What was found my colon had diverticulitis explaining the symptoms as well as the polyps. I fully understand your concern and I think you should seek some reassurance from your GP as anxiety creates its own problems.

Hello and thank you for your answers. I have the letter from the hospital of my procedure and it says it was a hyperbolic polyp. Can I upload my note on here

I would definitely ask them to explain that. I’ve never heard that explanation. Did they take a biopsy of it? Sometimes they use a scope without the capability to remove a polyp? Definitely ask and get a better explanation.
