Hi not of a long post. Ex husband has been passing liquid blood since about March maybe longer and clots and diarrhoea many times a day. He has lost alot of weight and has pain in his side and lost his appetite. He went to hospital they done bloods all normal but cell count was high I can’t remember if it was red or white cells. Sent him home on a low fibre then high fibre diet. Still bleeding and poo is like noodles or sand. Fast forward to September he was violently sick and lots of loose poo and blood collapsed and had a seizure. Went to hospital. Didn’t do anything sent him home. Fast forward to last Thursday he had to go to hospital for what he thought was a camera down his throat. When he got there apparently they done a rectal exam just doctors finger. Apparently they couldn’t get the camera down his throat or anything else up his bum. Anyway apparently they told him if he doesn’t hear anything in 6 weeks not to worry if anything else we will contact you. 20hrs later they called and want him in for scans on Thursday. Has to fast from Tuesday. So worried. My sons say he looks so unwell.
worried : Hi not of a long post. Ex... - Colon Cancer Conn...
worried
I am absolutely flabbergasted at this. Can’t believe with all the horrible symptoms he has nothing had been done. With blood and diarrhoea why did he not have a FIT test. My bloods were fine but had a high FIT test and was put on the 2 week pathway. I had a CT scan and colonoscopy. The only way they can see if the problem is in the colon. How could they get a camera up as you have to take prep to clear the colon. Or was there another reason. To get a camera down I had to fast . I see they are quickly having him back. At least you will have some answers. I would make a complaint about his treatment, perhaps after he has his scans. Good luck and do let us know how he gets on.
Thankyou. My sons are not happy with the way he’s been treated. If you don’t mind me asking how long do results take do they tell you after scans that something is wrong.
I had a colonoscopy and they gave me the results straight away. As I had a relaxation drug I was in a bed for about 1/2 an hour and they brought it to me. Very explanatory, my CT scan I did not get results until I spoke to my GP. The hospital should give results straight away if there is anything that needs to be sorted. At my local hospital the consultant will speak to you rather than the notes . I have to say I am shocked he was sent home after a seizure . I know our hospitals are under stress but no excuse for his treatment.
Thankyou again for your reply. I hope your doing well. He has to fast from Tuesday apparently can drink oxo and that’s it. I think he’s having an mri scan not sure if he’s having a colonoscopy but you say they tell you there and then. I presuming if it’s sinister they have more tests to do.
My husband had a colonoscopy after a dodgy poo test (the one that’s posted to you),they gave result straight away, indeed dr said he saw something not right as he was doing the test and my husband could see it himself on the screen, then after dr told us imeadeatly that it was cancer, didn’t even wait for the biopsy,I guess they just know. Because they caught it really early and operated within 6 weeks(was just at beginning of covid)it was cut out and so far ,2years or so on all is ok apart from he developed a hernia and also had that sorted earlier this year. We are hoping that’s the end of it .
Thankyou for your message so glad your husband is doing well. My ex has been pushed from pillar to post to be honest. I think his symptoms have gone on for a long time. They kept treating him for acid reflux and divictulitis put him on a low fibre diet then changed it to a high fibre nothing has stopped the bleeding now he had lots of pain in his side and lost so much weight. Very worrying I’ve. Apparently they couldn’t get anything up his bum only doctors finger exam. On Thursday he has to have a scan I’m hoping we will find something out that day.
Luckily not cancer. I have problems but just have to be careful what I eat and cannot drink alchohol. I can only say how my hospital works. Hope yours is the same. If sinister I would presume treatment as well. Best wishes
Hi MissBookworm,
Thank you for posting in Colon Cancer Connected. I am sorry you are having to go through all of this. I see you are getting some very good advice and comments. I am also shocked at the treatment you Ex is getting. Not doing anything and just sending him home after a seizure is absolutely ridiculous treatment.
You did mention he was being treated for diverticulitis. How long ago did that start and did he have a colonoscopy then to determine the path of treatment?
With blood in his stool, abdominal pain and weight loss, he would definitely need a colonoscopy to determine what's going on. I see he was called back for some scans. Is he having a CT scan?
Also, one would need 'prep' for a colonoscopy or an endoscopy (camera down the throat). That's the procedure that is followed. And usually the patient is anesthetized for that procedure. I really hate to hear what you are having to put up with. I would definitely document what was going on and report it to whatever the governing agency is that has oversite on the NHS. But do that after you get the answers you are looking for.
We do wish you all the best in finding out answers and hope the rest of you healthcare experience goes smoothly and is productive. Please do let us know what you find out and let us know what procedures are being administered. I still can't believe what you have been put through. I'm praying you get put on the right path after the scan.🙏🧡

What a terrible dilemma for you and your ex-partner - and children. How on earth can he have been treated like this? I know only too well the terror of pooing blood and the whole feeling that your insides are imploding - and the pain. I am so sorry. I really hope you and others speak out for him. You should get on to the patient liaison people at his hospital straight away. I had bad symptoms back in August - blood loss, etc. and the surgery told me to take a laxative! On speaking to a friend in London, I called back and insisted I was seen. Luckily I got a more switched on GP who moved things on incredibly quickly. I am awaiting surgery having had a partial kidney nephrectomy back in August. Unusual to have two synchronous tumours that are most likely unrelated.
