Default to locked to community?

Might administrators consider making posts default to locked to community with option to unlock rather than the other way around?

Since this site is "Health Unlocked", I doubt the administrators have the ability to change a basic posting default setting. CLL Support does not host the website. They didn't design the post format, HealthUnlocked did. You'd have to ask the website designer admins of HealthUnlocked.

Hi Vlaminck,

-

We discussed that idea for many weeks and months about 5-10 years ago and the final answer was that the platform sponsors of HealthUnlocked want the default to be unlocked since that is the primary way new members find all the different communities - via Google search.

-

Like Facebook, Wikipedia & other "free" internet services HealthUnlocked is financed by advertising and donations, and those are easier the more members they can show.

As others have rightly said, Admin don’t have that authority. HU want google searches to find unlocked posts but advise against over sharing on open posts and using identifiable avatars.

A significant proportion of our members found their way to help they desperately need here through google searches.

Please remember to lock your posts to this community if the content could embarrass or identify you.

thank. I guess my unlocked posts might serve a purpose (I keep forgetting and can't figure out how to lock once posted).

Further to the very good answers you've received, historically about two thirds of HU membership comes from newly diagnosed people searching online for help in understanding their diagnosis. This post on our home page explains the pros and cons of posting locked: healthunlocked.com/cllsuppo... and how to edit your post so that it is locked.

This post from ten years ago healthunlocked.com/cllsuppo... covers tips on what you can do to protect your anonymity and the HU website also includes prompts to encourage posters not to share identifying information.

Anyone wanting to change their username to something less identifiable, can change it as explained here support.healthunlocked.com/...

To put all of this into context, more people are diagnosed with CLL each year in just the US and UK than our total membership and we are the largest CLL support group by a considerable margin - there's a lot of unmet need out there.

There are closed online CLL support communities, but membership of those groups is generally in decline and several have ceased operating over the last decade.

I think SofiaDeo has already done so :)

More seriously, the community volunteers and admins do watch for posts and replies where members may have inadvertently shared identifying information. We also get reports from concerned members reporting this. That's where the majority of our moderation effort goes; locking posts as appropriate (though we prefer members learn how to do this), as well as removing member's names, phone numbers, email addresses, etc.

Thanks. just got message that referred me to "more" and then to 'edit" and then to "share". That was the ticket. Understand about not defaulting to locked, but how about a button specifically for lock or community only all on its own and not under share which is under edit which is under more? I know that shouldn't be hard, but I searched around, saw more, saw edit and didn't recall that edit was the ticket so didn't click it, since I wasn't editing.

More..Edit, etc is the standard way post and reply options are provided on HU - it's their site standard. While HU have done lots of adjustments over the years to how the sharing option is selected, you can always email HU Support at support@healthunlocked.com to provide your feedback.
