Pneumonia Vaccines : How many kinds of pneumonia vaccines are there? (CLL )

I received a lot of responses to my recent pnuemonia susceptability question.

Now I think there may be more vaccines for pnuemonia than the two pneumovaccines I had when first diagnosed with CLL., based on the responses I received.

To the Community in the USA :, what are the Pneumovaccines available to us CLL patients?

Thanks in advance to respondents,

Humaniquarian

Robert

Hi Robert,

Your question has prompted PaulaS to update our pinned post on this topic here: healthunlocked.com/cllsuppo...

Note that approvals vary from country to country, so some of us may have to wait before prevnar20 is available to them.

Prevnar 20? So we should be getting the three of them?

Prevnar20 includes cover for a further 7 bacterial serotypes 'variants' that can cause pneumonia over Prevnar13. Where Prevnar20 is approved, (e.g. USA), get vaccinated with it in place of Prevnar13.

I wonder if we have had 13, should we go back and ask for 20?

My question also.

The choice and priority of serotypes covered should reflect their community incidence, so you'll get some marginal benefit from the additional coverage, plus I expect an immunity boost for the serotypes already covered in Prevnar13. Given the observed antibody boost from COVID-19 boosters, I suggest it's a good question to put to your doctor/specialist, particularly for those in or recently completing treatment.

We had the same question. Here's the CDC info for those in the USA. Scroll to the bottom of the page:

"For those who have received PCV13 with or without PPSV23, CDC recommends you:

Give PPSV23 as previously recommended.* See Pneumococcal Vaccine Timing for Adults for specific guidance. The incremental public health benefits of providing PCV15 or PCV20 to adults who have received PCV13 only or both PCV13 and PPSV23 have not been evaluated."
