Acalabrutinib and dry skin etc

kitchengardener2 profile image

Good morning everyone. I started treatment with Acalabrutinib in September and have been fine, no real side effects. My white blood count is now down to 24.1 and Heamaglobin in normal range. I just have a question for anyone else who is a Acalabrutinib user. My hair and skin are much drier and my nails are weaker with ridges. I don't use nail polish regularly (no good in the garden) but I do like my nails to look nice. Does anyone have hints or advice, I use lots of hand cream, moisturiser and hair conditioner and try not to wash my hair too much.

I can empathise with the dry skin; mine has always been dry but has got worse over the past year of being on calquence. I buy a really good quality body lotion/butter/balm etc. Anything of the shelf just isn`t rich enough for me.

Hair has dried out since I went through the menopause but I`m finding now it`s a lot softer and not quite as wiry as it was. Nails....have you tried rubbing in an oil of some kind........jojoba, olive oil......something of that kind.

Good luck.......take care and stay safe {{hugs}}

Thank you so much, I will try the oil on my hands and nails. I do use good moisturiser and a mask on my hair a couple of times each week (my hairdresser recommended that). I am 69 so menopause long gone. If this all I have to complain of for the sake of good health, I will live with it. You stay safe, warm and strong. 🤗🤗

Since I started Acalabrutnib in September, I began taking Organic Bone Broth capsules for added collagen. I'm also taking Hair, Skin & Nails supplement (both from Mercola). My dry skin has improved and my nails are only slightly weaker. I think both are worth a try. Good Luck.

I take multi vitamin capsule each day and loath to take anything else but I might just look for a recipe for bone broth, I already make my own soups. Thank you anyway.

Biotin helps with the finger nails. My skin is dry, too.

What is that and can I buy over the counter?

Biotin is a B complex vitamin easily available over the counter. I take 10,000 mcg a day. It's really helped my nails.

Have you asked your consultant if it is OK to take? My multi vitamin which I was told was ok includes B1 B2 B6 and B12 so wonder if I have enough there.

Yes, I see Dr. Byrd, who for our newer members is a top doc, and I disclose that I take this every time. I also take a multivitamin and didn't get good results with 5000 mcg. I only do the multivitamin and biotin, i.e. no additional supplements because I am worried about putting additional stuff into my body (though I do have a couple glasses of wine a week and desserts so I'm not super perfect as far as optimizing diet).

I take Biotin and it really helps hair and skin although I'm off it at the moment so hair is a nightmare. I use WOW hair products including their leave in conditioner. You can use the leave in conditioner on dry hair every day. I have tried nearly every product on market and find WOW to be the best for my now problem hair. I agree Acalabrutinib has done the damage. In terms of skin I make my own essential oils shower soap as bought ones seem to strip the goodness from my skin and leave it very dry.

I buy the base product and add avocado oil or evening primrose oil and then a couple of essential oils that take my fancy: orange and geranium or lavender and rose.

I do also use my own body oil for my aches and that acts as a top up after the shower.

I see you are in UK so where do you buy your products, I don't shop online at all.

I get my supplies online from The Soapery for the soap base and avocado oil

Kobashi oils for the essential oils.

Do you have a family member who could order for you.

Failing that your local Health food store might help out with some good products they could recommend.

Hi Kitchen , i am on calquence also . i am a fair skinned , freckled person and my dry skin is mostly on my face and hands ... i have some special hand cream by burt's bees thats good , but i use it only if i have been working outside without my gloves on ... most of the time i just use extra virgin olive oil . simple and cheap ... i first rub it real good into my hands ,then the residue that is left i rub on my face .. then there is always a little residue left after that , just enough for my hair without making it " have that oily look " but just enough to help my scalp and hair feel and look better... i do this every day usually only once a day and often at night after i wash thoroughly with mild soap no perfumes ..in the soap .. ... so when i wake up in the morning it feels much better ...then again in the morning if i need to . i can use a simple shampoo but if i use any rinse products on my hair it really drys my hair out also messes my scalp and hair up P.H. wise ... there are lots of products available with biotin in them and for long term improvement it will definitely help you . just be patient your body will have to grow new nails and hair using the biotin supplement .. as others have said .. how do your lab tests look as far as your blood protein is concerned ??? experiment a little and you will find just what works for you but try to keep it simple .....i always ask the Lord to help me and He always does but i have to do my part as well... blessings , james
