Spike Protein AB Test - What color Vial

RobertCLL profile image
14 Replies

I attended the hospital today for my monthly IVIG infusion. Whilst there, I also have my regular blood draw. Included in the blood draw today was a Covid Spike Protein Antibody Test. It was not known to the nurses what color vial should be used. Because it was the weekend there was no one at Pathology to answer the question. In the end they used a Yellow Vial.

Anyone know what color vial should be used for a Covid Spike Protein Antibody Test?

I was lucky, I asked and the test was ordered. I appreciate that no one knows what level is safe. Will the result change my behaviour, no it won't. Still be like a recluse. Just a nice to know.

Robert, I'm having a blood draw at UCLH tomorrow including a spike protein antibody test. I'll try to remember to check colours with the phlebotomist and get back to you.Roger

I wonder if this test will become standard for Blood Cancer patients across the world? I haven’t bothered to get this test as it didn’t seem the information would be useful given how inconclusive it is said to be. Has this changed?

Mark my Consultant is refusing to test because he says not enough is known about the testing yet.

I did the NHS Cancer one that said I ‘ had antibodies in my blood which meant it’s likely I have had Covid in the last 6 months. We detected antibodies that are made after an infection, and also antibodies that could have been caused by a vaccine.’ Now I am sure I would have noticed if I had Covid or an infection so I am assuming they have come from my IVIG.

But this will not change my routine for now.

I had my jab and 17 days later I had ivig. Later my glands under my arm were tender and I had pains the way you would if you had a bug. This was the same side I had the ivig put into. I hoped it was a sign the vaccine had worked and the covid antibodies in the ivig reacted to it. I know its wishful thinking. I will get tested now. Which lab did you go through? I will prepare myself for disapointment. My grandson was poorly but his brother had a blocked nose and was well when they had covid. It would be good if the ivig was working. Anne uk

It was the NHS cancer one. It is mentioned by the CLL society. There has been a lot written about it here because there were a number of teething problems.

Just read your posts again. I had read them earlier and forgotten the earlier discussion. I didnt want to test before but after a 3rd vaccine and now ivig I thought if there are any antibodies this is the time. I need to decide who to get the test with. I will ask my consultant tomorrow. Anne uk

Anne don’t be surprised if your Consultant won’t have a clue who to use ! But worth asking if they will do in the hospital and explain the results. Mine refused.I am hopeful that IVIG boosts ours 🤞but sadly mine has been cut to every two months because of supply.

I will ask but as you say I may have to google details of how to get a reliable test. I am still getting ivig every 4 weeks but I had better be prepared.

My Lab Corp requisition listed yellow, red, green, and light green as acceptable tubes so you should be fine. They drew mine in yellow tops both times and it was accepted 👍

So I should be good with the yellow. Should know the result today, so will post

Colour of vial cap is called (in the hospital) GOLD; to me it looked more like a orangy /yellow, but I'm a bloke so what do I know about colours!Roger

Received the result of a NHS Spike Protein Antibody test today. 97.76 U/mL so a positive result.

I appreciate that no one knows what the result means in terms of protection, but it's something considering that I am on Ibrutinib.

Result does not result in a change in my behaviour, will still shield.
