Two new studies published in Blood suggest that the mRNA COVID-19 vaccine may have reduced efficacy in individuals with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and multiple myeloma, two types of blood cancer. According to researchers, these studies could help inform the ideal time for vaccination of these populations.
Study suggests two-dose COVID-19 vaccine is less effective for people with CLL as compared to healthy controls
An interesting read and it’ll also be interesting to see if the University of Birmingham Research Study of CLL patients immunity of the Covid Vaccination report when it’s published, produces similar results.
To date the study from Tel Aviv is the reference for anyone interested in how CLL patients respond to vaccination against Covid19. It's the only one to yield grouped results for CLL patients at different stages of disease and treatment. The researchers plan to look at cellular immune responses too.
My hunch is that this study is essentially right and that larger studies ongoing in the US and the UK will just add more detail.
