Register u 60’s with GP

If you are under 60 & you register with your GP surgery as a carer - you get moved to tier 6. Anyone older would have already been vaccinated

Thanks Sepsur. Carers are supposed to be registered with GP’s anyway for special consideration in everyday dealings but in reality it doesn’t seem to confer any special privileges as I know from experience. I can’t see there where it says carers are moved up the vaccine tariff list and at the moment they are only vaccinating the over 70’s. The 60+’s haven’t been offered slots yet.

Certainly worth completing this however. In that our partners and carers can receive the flu vaccine at the same time as us, I think it would have been beneficial if they’d been given the vaccine at the same time.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out because there are a number of professions and people who contend they are front line who are pushing for priority including Police Officers.

Doesn’t appear to only be the under 60’s carers however Sepsur but the person must be in receipt of the Carers Allowance.

From what I understood the GPs have some discretion/ mine asked me if Jackie was claiming carer’s allowance. I said no but , I said, if she became incapacitated- I would really struggle. A week later, she got jabbed / and she’s not a happy bunny today - still whining about the jab

Early days Sepsur but not a lot of shopping opportunities at the moment. I think the support our partners give us everyday eclipses any present (and my hubby agrees!) 😄

There are many many carers who can't claim carers allowance - my husband can't because he is not yet retired. However, he works from home 99% of the time, and entirely during lockdown. It is him who shops unless we get it delivered - we tend to prefer to choose our own meat and our own fruit and the few veggies he doesn't grow myself. But he really needs the vaccine to protect me. I had a government letter (aka Essay) on Saturday which said something about carers, but I can't remember what.

In our family there was a slightly older teen - just 17 - registered as a carer and receiving carers allowance for looking after his gran - which actually he wasn't doing a good job of, but that is another story. He was entitled to all sorts of support as a young carer, which he didnt take up. But being registered is a young carer is a really positive thing for a young person who is caring for someone. They get all sorts of support, and of course they meet other young people who are in the same position as they are. So yes, I would recommend it to your grandson.

There is confusion in official circles about carers and Covid vaccination.

One thing is clear: partners may go out into the world so their Clinically Extremely Vulnerable spouses/ housemates don't have to, but that doesn't make them carers in the eyes of those who draft up Official Guidance.

Another thing is clear: in that guidance the position of cohabitants in the queue for vaccination is "under consideration" as it was when the priority list was first published, despite appeals by Blood Cancer UK and others.

My GP's practice called me today to offer a vax appointment on Friday.

Great I said, can my wife and carer (one and the same) get done at the same time?

No said the practice dragon, she's not on our list.

But she gets an annual flu jab even though she's under 65, said I, suddenly wondering if it was wise to make such an admission to the dragon.

No Covid and flu are different said she.

Yes I think everyone gets that.

No I mean the rules are different as to who is entitled to the vaccine.

OK but yesterday your colleague said my wife would be able to come in with me and get vaccinated too (this is true).

Just a minute I'll check your wife's file. What's her name?.....(time passes)..... Lucky I checked, she can have the Covid vaccination. Can you come at 14:20, your wife at 14:25.

As Sepsur said, there is some discretion with the GP surgery. At the moment they’re using the definition of ‘carer’ as someone who receives the Carers Allowance to qualify for group 6 vaccination. To qualify for that, the cared for person would need to be in receipt of DLA/PIP and thankfully not so many CLL’ers are in need of that level of personal care. Glad your wife managed to get an appointment.

Anyway somewhere along the line logic prevailed and I am thankful, this is still group 4.

My GP accepted that my wife was my primary carer (although she does not get or qualify for allowance) - he accepted I’d be up shit creek if she got ill 😊
