Covid-19 & Mouthwash
Thanks Nickos66,
I have just checked both my bottles of mouthwash and this ingredient is in the really cheap (50p?) one, own brand from Morrisons!! Definitely will be sticking with that one from now on 👍🏼
I would think that the trial will determine if it really is effective but also how often you need to use it to reduce your risk. Should it be after possible exposure or routinely throughout the day?
It will be interesting to see the results for this.

Sounds like a win - win. If it reduces the viral load that’s awesome.
If it doesn’t then you’re still left with sweet smelling breath.

As the article says: Professor David Thomas, from Cardiff University who is leading the clinical trial, said: "Although this in vitro study is very encouraging and is a positive step, more clinical research is now clearly needed.

"We need to understand if the effect of over-the-counter mouthwashes on the COVID-19 virus achieved in the laboratory can be reproduced in patients, and we look forward to completing our clinical trial in early 2021."

We often see many common substances that kill CLL cells in a petri dish, but have no effect in the body. So this needs to be tested in real people to determine if it has any practical uses. It is unfortunate that the manufacturer was involved in the research and likely the release of preliminary information to the press. And IMO - they will be "innocently surprised" when there is a strong uptick in demand for their product before the trials yield any data.

I checked into it and Len is right. Guess actual clinical trials have to be carried out. Here is a quote on this from Refinery 29:
Before you run out to the pharmacy and buy Walgreens (A USA Pharmacy) out of mouthwash, know that this research is in the very early stages. The team of scientists haven’t done clinical trials on humans yet, and they tested with a coronavirus associated with common colds, rather than the one that causes COVID-19. It could be promising as an added layer of protection, but experts told The New York Times that mouthwash is no silver bullet. The coronavirus the study looked into, 229E, and SARS-CoV-2 — the virus that causes COVID-19 — are in the same family and anatomically similar, but not totally interchangeable, Angela Rasmussen, PhD, a virologist at Columbia University, told The Times.
Good news and bad news, but it may be "added" protection.
Months ago I read about rinse called Halo
that could potentially protect against Covid the main ingredient is . Cetylpyridinium Chloride. Of course I bought several bottles of it on the Internet but really have never used it it was taken off the market briefly for testing to see if it was effective against Covid I haven't heard the results of the study
Even if it is found to be not effective - people will have kept their teeth and gums wonderfully clean which can only be a good thing - as my Dentist friend says only floss the teeth you want to keep!
Mouthwash, as I understand, potentially poisons the gut microbiome. If the gut is out of kilter then the body simply does not work well. I don't think any mouthwashes or toothpastes, for that matter, are properly researched. They just want to sell you stuff.
Hello Nickos66
The information I read on mouthwash treatment, had a suggestion that it be circulated through ones nose. I am not sure I want to do that. I sometimes wonder if my swishing salt/baking soda solution in morning and night has reduced my illnesses. I started using the
salt/baking soda solution during my B+R treatment for any possible mouth sores at doctors suggestion. I have not had any illness since before B+R treatment. My wife who works at hospital has been tested twice for CV-19 after contact with CV-19 patients. So far so good.
