Draft proposals for vaccine

Recently released proposal for a Covid vaccine from the Joint Committee on Vaccines and Immunisations puts shielders down in 6th place if aged under 65. Priority is given to care homes and staff and nhs workers and the rest in age categories. It has to be stated that this is a draft, however, our silence on this matter will lead us to be locked up for longer. We already know that a vaccine is not a silver bullet, especially for those of us with compromised immune systems, however, we have already had our lives severely restricted far more than any other group of individuals. I find this information extremely disturbing.

Do you have a link for this? Google just failed me. To be honest tho I’m not holding out much hope for vaccines to work for most of us and so we will only really feel safe when the whole population. Is vaccinated and so the rate goes down. Having had a very cold social meet up outside at the forest outdoor cafe I like today I need to buy a warmer coat !

This seems to be the list referred to. Interestingly makes no reference to people who care for the highly vulnerable at home and present a risk to them.

Here's their provisional priority list:

Older adults' resident in a care home and care home workers

All those 80 years of age and over and health and social care workers

All those 75 years of age and over

All those 70 years of age and over

All those 65 years of age and over

High-risk adults under 65 years of age

Moderate-risk adults under 65 years of age

All those 60 years of age and over

All those 55 years of age and over

All those 50 years of age and over

Rest of the population (priority to be determined)

Interesting. I’d like to hope those of us under 65 will fall into high risk and not moderate risk!

I don't think the vaccine will necessarily be the silver bullet most everyone seems to be counting on. My understanding is that to be approved, among other things, the vaccine only has to be effective in 50% of the cases. IOW, if you get the vaccine, your odds of being protected are the same as your odds of winning a coin flip. With those kind of odds, I still see myself wearing a mask, social distancing etc., even after I get both doses of the vaccine. However, hopefully, the ultimate vaccine will be better the 50% minimum standard.

We need to protect ourselves as we already have done in the past from flu etc but a vaccine will help like other vaccines it won't give us full protection but even if it's 20% it's better then nothing and like the flu vaccine gives us a better outcome even if we do catch it

I agree it’s better than nothing. At the moment we are still on a different boat in these choppy waters.
