Hi my 76 year old mum is just about to start treatment, not sure yet what meds she will be on. She has really bad copd so health already bad. She doesn’t eat much and hardly drinks any water I’m really worried that she won’t cope with the side effects from chemo 😢

Do they give chemo to people her age? Does she qualify for some of the novel BTK inhibitors? Don't loose hope, she might do better than you expect.

Hi Natalie! So sorry to hear about your mum, it must be so difficult for you both, as she is already in bad health. I know little about these matters but wanted to reach out, as my understanding is at your mother's age she will not be offered chemotherapy. I'm sure other more knowledgeable member of the community will chip in, but my sense of the more novel drugs which are available is that many of them can be well tolerated and side effect free. So fingers crossed for your mum and here's hoping for a good and side effect free treatment. Keep us updated!

Yes as others have already mentioned, she probably would not be given chemotherapy. For CLL there are now many newer targeted drugs which have fewer side effects. Many older members of this site have had successful treatment with few or no side effects.
