Swollen Elbow (bursitis)

My father who has CLL and has been on ibrutinib a year or 2, today developed a swollen elbow that had some pus. He went to a family doctor today and they said it looked like bursitis and gave him antibiotics. Has anyone else ever had this who is also on ibrutinib?

Thanks for letting me know, gives me some relief to think it may just be a side effect and go away.

I think that your father's doctor's need to distinguish between an inflamed bursa and an infection. If they drew off pus an infection would be more likely than bursitis, unless possibly if he has a ruptured bursa. Bursas are a part of functioning joints. I have one on my hip that sometimes becomes inflamed. Both my doctor and a very good physical therapist have told me rest, anti inflammatories, and heat to help symptoms, and time! I dont like the time part, because like most people, I want a quick fix for pain, but mine has come and gone for over 20 years now without needing any invasive interventions.

yeah im a bit worried, I drove down from San Francisco to LA to see him. Looks like his elbow has bursitis along with scabbing/infection and cellulitis on his forearm. The family doctor gave him some antibiotics but doesn't look like its really working much. His CLL doctor isn't seeing patients now during covid.

Be careful - having cll makes it more likely he will get cellulitis. The antibiotics make take care of it, but keep a close watch! (Been there)

I think he has that on his forearm, and bursitis and scabbing on his elbow. His family doctor gave him antiobiotics and its his last day taking it, seems like it hasn't gone away though.

I would be concerned with having pus with bursitis. Antibiotic Treatment should take care of it, but it might be a good idea to consult with CLL specialist.

Did they do culture and sensitivity test on the pus to know the growth of bacteria and what antibiotics it is sensitive to ?

Take care

they just gave him antibiotics. He wasn't able to see his CLL doctor so he went to a family doctor, he said its improved but I saw it today and his elbow is definitely swollen and pointy with a bunch of scabs on it.
