I am surprised by the fact, no where (unless I missed it) do HMS talk about "D serum levels" in the blood, it has less to do with amounts and everything to do with circulating serum levels. It is a fat soluable vitamin (actually a hormone) so size (of the individual) matters. I have seen people take 2000iu per day and be able to get their serum level above 100nmol/l and others need over 6000iu per day to reach this level. The other thing that I would add is that as the amounts of D gets larger, the helpful co-factors become more important, 2 of these being magnesium and vitamin K2 (K2 can't be taken while on blood thinners). This does not need to be a guessing game, there is a simple blood test available, if you decide to be tested, D takes 90 days to reach its max in your system, so after being on a set daily dose for 90 days, get tested and adjust accordingly.

I live in Canada, where winter is looooong with little sun, when I was diagnosed with CLL I had been taking 2000iu per day for 5 years...so I had my D level tested, and I was severly deficient (while on 2000iu per day), so to suggest amounts without testing makes very little sense to me, we don't do it with cholesterol or high blood pressure medications, and it should not be done with vitamin D.

Good Luck!

We have seen these negative reports about Vitamine D3 many times over the last years.

It is nonsense to discuss what amount of IU, whether 1000 or 10.000 you should take a day. First and most important is the Vitamin D Level!!! You should get it via blood test , very easy!!!

Level should be 50-70!!! If less take 20.000 or more a week and have another test after four weeks. Then you can evaluate, how your body reacts. Without testing, everything is nonsense.

Facts is, that a good VIT D3 Level prevents lots of minor diseases and that is, what many GPs and their organisations dislike.

The Level is not mentioned is this article! Strange!!!!

When I was first diagnosed with CLL, it was also noted that I had a vitamin D3 deficiency. I thought it was unusual because I spend seven months in Florida (the sunshine State) and the balance of the year (summer /fall months) in northern Vermont. Anyway, after discussion with my primary care provider and hematologist, I started on a regimen of vitamin D3. I would strongly caution everyone to also check their other supplements which contain vitamin D 3-for example my daily multivitamin tablet has 400 units of vitamin D3 and my calcium with D3 also contains another 400 units. Add to this, the other 2000 units of vitamin D3 which I take daily. So this brings my daily total to 2800 units of vitamin D3.

After six months of this regimen, my vitamin D3 level was 34. 82 with the normal range being 30 to 100. Certainly a big jump from the original of 22 :-) I find that my energy level is certainly better, but that is only my personal opinion. The BIG thing that I would like everyone to take away from this is that you need to have your levels drawn, every individual is very different and don’t increase or decrease supplements without talking with your doctor first. I am a 67 year old woman So my levels of vitamin D3 and also my absorption capability will certainly differ from many of you folks. Love to all!
