Bone marrow aspirate and trephine

I had the above procedure yesterday with sedation. The nurse had to really bear down on the bone to get the “corkscrew” type implement in. As I am on the FLAIR trial she did it twice.

We stayed near the hospital last night and I felt great - glad it was behind me! My husband and I had a 6 hour car journey home and I drove the last two hours. I’ve gone from feeling great this morning to feeling terrible. My head is woozy and I feel weak and sick. Is this normal?

I’d appreciate anyone’s feedback

I don't think it is a normal reaction to BMB. It might be a reaction to the sedation, but I would not think that was a "normal" reaction.

If you know what your were given as a sedation med. look up possible side effects. Could you may have contracted a flu or flu like bug?

To give you relief from any guessing/anxiety as well as to be on top of anything that might be related to your treatment/CLL, don't hesitate to call your trial team and describe your situation.

Thanks for replying.

I wonder if it is the sedation. I have done some research and side effects, though rare, are symptoms such as I am displaying. I definitely will call the team, but by the time we arrived home this evening, it is after hours for the department.

Mandy, it is good to keep a record of any medicines you have reaction to--especially with CLL and all the treatments that are possible to have contraindicated problems.

If you report it as a side effect, it should be in your records so Drs. will not use it for you again---however, it is good to have it in your own papers/notes and to be reviewed often so you have it in mind when visiting a new Dr. / needing sedation again.

Hi Cllady

Having spoken to the nurse today, she doubts that any drug reaction would take so long (24 hrs) to show. She thinks it is more likely due to all the tests I had that day -lots of blood taken, the bone marrow with sedation and then CT with dye. On top of that high anxiety levels and two days of travelling were probably all a bit much. I feel fine today, though a little tired. Thank you very much for your input.
