Acid reflux with imbruvica and or Venetoclax ? Has anyone had it? What do you recommend to help solve it.

Hello I am on a combination trial of Imbruvica plus Venetoclax. Overall I am doing well but I have had acid reflux's a bit lately. I know bloating is one of the possible side effects of Venetoclax.

I have had it a bit in the past as well so it may not be related to the drugs either. I have seen a doctor in the past and he is recommended not eating too late, elevating the bed add a bit of an angle, watching alcohol consumption .

Just checking if anyone has experience with this issue .

Thanks!

My reflux resolved after starting Venetoclax, I assume because the size of my spleen returned to normal. I took Pepcid for years, plus the lifestyle changes you mentioned, to control my reflux. After my spleen was found to be normal in size in August, I did a trial off the Pepcid and I have had no further problems with reflux. I haven't had any side effects at all with Venetoclax.

Hi Hoffy,

Yes I agree withMelioraDay, on Ibrutinib I had reflux and was told to try Gaviscon. This worked well, but took a little time to be effective. Now I'm on Venetoclax, currently on a quarter dose, I do not have any problems.

Hope that you get better quickly since it's very tiring.

Hi Hoffy, my sister takes mastica chios, the gum from a tree in Greece. It should be available in capsule form at health food stores. Ask your doc if it's something you may be able to take during treatment.

Works well for her?

How does she take it?

She seems to think that it works well. She's on a plane coming home from Florida so I will let you know tomorrow!

From my sister: I only take one a day but you’re supposed to take 1 capsule three times daily on an empty stomach according to directions

Hi

I have had acid reflux more or less since I started taking Ibrutinib .

I find in the mornings it can be worse .I also find if I bend down to do anything it is really bad .I used to do Yoga but no longer can do any floor poses as it makes it worse .

I no longer can have a glass of wine with a meal as even the first sip starts it off .Tomatoes also can make it worse .

I chew dried ginger and take gaviscon if it gets too bad .It does help.

Hope it helps to know that there are others that experience side effects too .

I do not have CLL but I have had gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) for 15+ years. Every morning (one hour before eating) I take Prilosec 20mg. For an occasional acute attack I take Zantac 150mg, then Maalox Advanced Maximum Strength, and as a last resort 1/2 teaspoon baking soda in 4 oz warm water. As with all medications please follow your doctor's recommendations and/or the label directions.

A forkful or two of kimchee or sauerkraut makes the heartburn go away within minutes. Personally, I'd rather eat healthy food as a cure than take medication.

I happen to love these fermented foods. If you don't, maybe consider it as worthwhile medication?

Sounds good. Do you eat it before meals?

I happen to love kimchee, and sometimes put a spoonful on my salad. Through the months when I got heartburn from Imbruvica (this symptom tends to abate after a few months), I downed it when the heartburn appeared, not as prevention. Very effective.

Many of us drink lots of water with meals, with no affect on digestion, and when a filter is installed on the water coming out of the tap, it is low cost. Perhaps it is the wine industry that promotes the myth of drinking wine for digestion?

Thank you for all the suggestions. Sounds good .

I am feeling better today. Might be some of the wine I had this weekend as well .....

Someone said it's not good to drink water during meals because it affects the digestion .

I don't know if that's true or not.

Thanks.

I had acid reflux for most of my adult life, until a stay in hospital around 15 years ago, when, because I was on my back all the time, I was given a proton pump inhibitor (omeprazole) - it works wonders for me... hardly ever a problem nowadays. The advice regarding avoiding eating late or drinking in the evenings is also valuable - I rarely eat anything after 7pm, and often drink glasses of water to aid digestion. When 'obliged' by some social event to eat in the evening, I take an extra omeprazole at least an hour before the meal, and stay up with quite a few glasses of water before going to bed. That usually works.

(I believe that some suffer side effects with this medication, but I've been on it for 15 years with no problems.)

Thanks. Good info. I raise the head of my bed about 3/4 of an inch as well.

On the fortunately very rare occasions where my usual tactics don't work, I get up and sleep in my recliner... I got used to doing this after having to do so for some weeks following major nose reconstruction!
