Across leukaemia types as a group the numbers of patients diagnosed by emergency presentation is significantly higher than the national cancer average.
As we would expect, those most frequently presenting as emergencies are the acute leukaemia cases, CLL is a chronic condition and the majority present with stable disease. That said many when diagnosed with CLL on hearing Leukaemia immediately think the most likely scenario will be acute.
Many patients report that until diagnosis they had no idea what leukaemia was or what type was most likely or common to their age population.
This September Is Blood Cancer Awareness Month , in the run up, the 'Spot Leukaemia' campaign is now live, to prepare GPs and those who wish to get involved. The campaign seeks to raise awareness of types of leukaemia, symptoms and populations they are most likely to fall in , accompanied with promotion of GP e-learning tools and initiatives that empower the public and GPs together.
Early presentation, recognition, diagnosis and appropriate referral improves outcomes.

There are four main types of leukaemia that differ by the rate of cancer progression (acute or chronic) and the type of blood stem cell affected (myeloid or lymphoid).
