Flu vaccine and sweats

Diagnosed 2 years ago, on WandW and other than occasional day and night sweats, not really all that bothered by it. Even had a reduction on my Ly numbers.

However, it's flu vaccination time and so had it on Friday. During Friday night I was having horrendous sweats of super strength and these have continued since. I have had about 10 sweats daytime as well. it feels like my body has reacted unfavourably about the vaccine and is protesting loudly. I have always, even before CLL diagnosis got a bad reaction from the flu vaccine, even though doc says I shouldn't as it isn't a live virus.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience. I am a little worried about it. Have my white blood cells been over stimulated I wonder?

Had my annual UK flu jab yesterday. The nurse spent a while before going through side affects suggesting they may last just a few days. She told me to keep an eye on temperature. This I do anyway daily.

I think if i were you i would do one of two things. 1. Go and see your GP. 2.Phone your consultant, if you are in the UK their secretary will take and pass on the message.

Throughout my treatment I was told to ask if unsure and not try to solve symptoms by myself. It's now over 3 days of symptoms for you , so time to ask.

I had my flue jab about 10 days ago, and was made aware of so-called side effects. I was not worried because it never affected me before. However, this time I had similar severe night sweats, headaches, fatigue, slept for days, and muscle aches. I'm 58, and been diagnosed 2 years ago. WBC about 25000. On WW. Every year these injections differ, and this one might just not been very CLL friendly. Who knows?

Thank you both for your replies. Its interesting devonrr that you were asked to keep an eye on temperature and MadMina your symptoms sound just like mine. I too had the fatigue to add to the severe sweats. I had a good night last night and didn't have a sweat (hurray!) so maybe the effect of the vaccination is calming down. In any case I'm going to talk to me GP about this and will give serious consideration to not having a flu vaccination next year.

I am just recovering from my flu jab last week. I became really ill and landed up in day care with a bad chest infection and now on very strong antibiotics.

My CLL nurse said it's important to continue with the flu jab next year because every year it's a different flu strain. Also that I probably already had the infection before I had the jab but I will think long and hard next year.

Oh dear, that's not what you expect from flu jab. Aren't they meant to protect you? - ha!

I agree with you that some serious thought needs to be given to this. I'm going to go for Echinacea and Vit D next autumn and winter.

I really hope you are feeling much better now.

Having received my flu shot 2 weeks ago, I too have been reeling with sweats, weakness, GI problems and aching "to the bone." After reading this: articles.mercola.com/sites/..., I was going to avoid the shot, but worry got the better of me. Today, I'm going to report my reaction to the national reporting center. I sometimes wonder if our immune systems have trouble handling such foreign invaders and fight desperately to deal with them, thereby creating these side effects. I wish you well, Tobago!

Thanks Mutamer for sharing the link and I have read it horrified. I wasn't aware that the flu vaccine could harm my immune system and may take months to recover. No wonder my body reacted so badly to the vaccination - it all makes sense to me now. I have spent the last two years working to keep my immune system in tip top condition - so much work to get it back again.

On a good point, the day and night sweats have stopped again and I'm beginning to feel less tired.

I intend to talk to my oncologist about this at next appointment but will not be having it again! Good luck to you Mutamer. Is the national reporting centre an American body?

Had my quadrivalent flu jab 3 weeks ago. Some slight redness around the injection site for one day.

I'm post BR 20 months and going strong. I strongly feel for myself that the flu jab is important.

Sorry some of you were so sick.

mutamer and Hidden , you need to have some appreciation of the reliability (or otherwise) of websites before you take any action based on their content.

'Joseph Michael Mercola (born 1954) is an alternative medicine proponent, osteopathic physician, and web entrepreneur, who markets a variety of controversial dietary supplements and medical devices through his website, Mercola.com.

:

Mercola has been criticized by business, regulatory, medical, and scientific communities. A 2006 BusinessWeek editorial stated his marketing practices relied on "slick promotion, clever use of information, and scare tactics."'

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josep...

'The medical community says Mercola is dangerous, and that he steers patients away from proven medical treatments in favor of unproven therapies and supplements.

“The information he’s putting out to the public is extremely misleading and potentially very dangerous,” says Dr. Stephen Barrett, who runs the medical watchdog site Quackwatch.org. “He exaggerates the risks and potential dangers of legitimate science-based medical care, and he promotes a lot of unsubstantiated ideas and sells [certain] products with claims that are misleading.”

Mercola has been the subject of a number of Food and Drug Administration warning letters about his activities, including marketing products as providing “exceptional countermeasures” against cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and a host of other illnesses.':

alternet.org/personal-healt...

'Mercola.com is a horrible chimera of tabloid journalism, late-night infomercials, and amateur pre-scientific medicine, and is the primary web presence of Joseph Mercola.':

sciencebasedmedicine.org/9-...

While the last reference is an article written in 2009, if you read it, you'll appreciate that Joseph Mercola hasn't changed his approach in writing misleading information about influenza vaccinations.

Just a few observations from mutamer's Mercola reference:

'In January 2015, U.S. government officials admitted that, in most years, flu shots are, at best, 50 to 60 percent effective at preventing lab confirmed influenza requiring medical care.'

I'll gladly accept some temporary discomfort from a procedure that reduces by about half my risk of hospitalisation and even death from a flu infection that I know my immune system will struggle to overcome. I also accept that given I have CLL and am getting older, I probably won't get that degree of effectiveness, but vaccination is still worth while.

What's important to appreciate is that governments do monitor the effectiveness of flu shots and do make changes where studies indicate they are worthwhile. The flu shot now covers against four flu strains (it used to be three) and a later version of the H1N1 influenza virus strain is now included for a more effective response: healthunlocked.com/cllsuppo...

This action by the US government negates some of Mercola's discussion in the section 'What Recent Science Says About Annual Flu Vaccinations', so he needs to update his article.

A few of other points illustrating how Mercola writes his articles to mislead and scare rather than inform you:

'Influenza vaccine does not appear to prevent influenza-like-illness (ILI) associated with other types of viruses responsible for about 80 percent of all respiratory or gastrointestinal infections during any given flu season.' Why would we expect it to do so? These are influenza-like-illness, not influenza!

In the section of the risk of disability, the risks are not quantified - because to do so would not support his argument.

In the table in the section 'Vaccines Wreak Havoc on Your Immune System', the table contains statements where the critical words are 'can' and 'may', so perhaps the section should be more correctly titled 'Vaccines may Wreak Havoc on Your Immune System', but then again, we know the flu does do that; no can or may about it.
