These birds lay their well disguised eggs in a nest on the ground and are very good at distracting potential predators from the nest by various means, including faking a broken wing while running away from the hard to see nest. Sometimes it is possible to see the spur on their wing as is shown in the photo in the link below, hence their other common name - the Spur Winged plover:
