Hello Cholesterol support forum🙂

I was never in the Brownies or the Guides but it feels like I am busy collecting Health Unlocked forum topics a bit like the badges I heard about! This is my third, I am on the AF and the Glaucoma one. I had a routine full blood check last week which has shown my cholesterol level is 5.8, and has gone up from 5.1 in 12 months. Two things are worrying, I live as healthy a life style as I can, rarely drink, eat healthily, don't smoke and exercise quite a lot, and the second is if I get another AF episode (I go into permanent and have had three ablations) I am concerned about the potential new difficulty pumping blood around my body. I am on anti coagulants and BP tablets, lowish doses.

Does anybody know of any reasons it could increase so quickly when nothing has changed in my lifestyle and anything I could do to improve it given I do everything else?

I have bought some Benecol drinks and stopped my only real vice - a packet of chocolate buttons every day!

if your only vice was chocolate buttons, your living a saintly life!! there is unfortunately a lot of sugar and saturated fat in those things, so im glad youve stopped!! i dont know if i have A fib, but sometimes my heart is rapid and pounding, and when i use my wrist bp monitor it shows the warning flash for uneven heart beat, i suppose i should get checked! on statins my cholesterol is down from 5.8 to 3.5, but on the odd occasion i get a rapid heart beat i take a magnesium tablet and that seems to stop it in its tracks, magnesium taurate is supposed to be the best for heart palpitations, i get it from Holland and Barrett! i think lots of caffeine or sugar can sometimes cause it?

as well as magnesium tablets there is a thing online called the valsalva maneuver, check it online, but it comes with warnings not to do it if you have heart disease, so maybe one to ask your gp about? good luck!
