So my GP called and asked me to make a 'non urgent' appt to discuss my latest bloods. Having - very reluctantly - been on 20mg atorvastatin for some time now..My blood sugars are way up my liver function is way to high ...BUT my total cholesterol is down:-

GGT 56 (normal 5 - 35) other liver test s ok

HbA1c 70 (normal 20 - 42) the highest it's been

Cholesterol 4.8 - Not broken down despite me requesting it..

I also have liver pain, tinnitus, joint pain and am not happy..I will be strongly suggesting I come off my statins citing many of the things I have seen and read here..

You need to look at all your medical condition and ask your GP to offer life style change. May be a risk analysis?

Your HbA1C is 70, any medication or life style change offered?

No meds apart from statin and calcium and vit D..Not sure how I can improve my lifestyle to be honest..Thank you, will go check that out...

I'd use the scholarly papers linked from here rather than mention here, else you may be regarded as a follower of Dr Google. I'm surprised liver function problems isn't getting you taken straight off and referred to a specialist clinic.

I have stopped them myself..I will be discussing this as a priority with my GP. Which specialist ? A liver specialist ?

If you haven't already done so, you need to change your diet and lifestyle so you don't have a need for statins. Eliminate sugar, and simple carbohydrates from your diet, reduce your consumption of animal protein, increase your consumption of vegetables, fruits and legumes. Start walking 30 to 60 minutes every day without exception.

I'm on it...:)...I do NOT want to go back on those bloody statins.. My liver is sore... I've becoming type II diabetic... ughhhhh

The body increases cholesterol in response to inflammation. If you are a very active person, blood pressure will increase with activity levels and still damages the endothelium in the same way as somebody who is overweight, triggering the need for cholesterol to repair the damage.

Vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen which can repair the damage in place of cholesterol.

You must therefore supplement heavily with vitamin C.

Try taking 1,000 mg of a vitamin c capsule with each of your 3 main meals each day.

Also add the amino acids called 'lysine' and 'proline' which will also assist with collagen formation.

I take 4 x 1,000 mg doses of liposomal vitamin C daily, which is the bioavailable equivalent of about 30,000 mg of regular vitamin c in capsule form.

I would hope I get enough vitamin C from my diet - I eat plenty of fresh fruit and veg. I am a bit wary of too much Vit C as I know it's pretty tough on the kidneys.. Yes I do exercise a lot - just done 45 minutes on my bike- but surely my BP is now recovering as I rest.. I've watched that video before it is very interesting..

Dear Weee,

For the record, you CANNOT get the amount of vitamin C required to provide you with OPTIMAL health from your diet. You can only get enough to avoid a deficiency. Understand that the medical establishment does not train doctors in the field of either nutrition or vitamins. They are usually given an afternoon of study on these subjects over the course of a 7-year education. All studies done on vitamin C's efficacy have been flawed due to the dosing being too low.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a molecule that the human body requires to survive. It is not toxic in ANY quantity. Vitamin C will not hurt your kidneys or liver. I have read 3 books on this subject. There's a lot of misinformation floating around the internet on Vitamin C - once one person cites a flawed source, everyone else cites the same source 'ad infinitum' and it becomes the perceived truth.

According to research by the late Dr. Linus Pauling (among others) Nobel-laureate winning chemist and the father of 20th century chemistry, every animal on earth synthesizes their own vitamin C which allows them to lead healthy, un-diseased lives until they die. Only humans, primates, the guinea pig and the fruit bat, do not synthesize vitamin C and they all suffer from heart disease among other viral and bacterial infections.

Based on studying animals who DO synthesize their own vitamin C, humans require anywhere from 4,000 to 20,000 mg of vitamin C daily to produce enough antioxidants and collagen in the body's ongoing fight to defend itself from the aging process, tissue damage and viral as well as bacterial disease infiltration.

Those who are very athletic and active, as you seem to be, require even more vitamin C due to the greater damage caused by high levels of exercise on your endothelium. Even though you rest after exercise, the sheer stress of the increased BP during exercise causes damage to the endothelium - that's why you sometimes hear of very fit people dying of a heart attack. Of course, there's also the issue of blood platelet aggregation which triggers thrombosis - and that can be addressed by folic acid (vitamin B9), B6 and B12 either through the diet or with complementary supplements for those who don't eat enough green vegetables daily.

Vitamin C in pill or powder form can eventually lead to bowel intolerance (diarrhea). For many people this would occur somewhere around 10,000 to 20,000 mg of daily vitamin C ingestion.

However, if you use what I use, liposomal vitamin C, the liposome is not metabolized by the body and goes directly to the intestine for absorption into the body's cell's and blood stream, therefore there is no risk of diarrhea and no processing through the kidney or liver.
