Halloween is on Thursday. This is a time of year that we know people in the visible difference community can find challenging, because people don’t know that doing things like applying scars with face paint is mocking someone who looks different to them.
That’s why we’re asking people to think twice about their costume if they are dressing up for Halloween. And to dress up as a character. Not a condition.
If you have a visible difference and feel upset at Halloween, remember our Support & Information Line is open Monday to Friday, 10am – 4pm on 0300 012 0275 and can help with emotional support. Our website also has resources included self-help factsheets for adults, parents and young people as well as a list of recommended organisations who can help. You can see them here qoo.ly/zzcpia
Very interesting. I've never celebrated Halloween and pretty much ignore people's costumes, especially if they're adults, but I can totally see how and why this would bother people. Once my facial paralysis kicked in, I could no longer enjoy my beloved Phantom of the Opera. It's on the same side he covers.
