Hi vixs19, I don't know really because I'm not a doctor, but sometimes they say taking too many antibiotics can have the reverse effect and wont work in the future if people are dependent on them only if the doctor thinks its really necessary. I dont know much about steroids but there are side effects but would want to ask the doctor or pharmacist about them if any. I hope it helps.

Hi Paula,

Go back to your doctor and get checked. My husband had something similar and it was Thrush caused by all the drugs. He now uses a special mouthwash

I agree this sounds like thrush. Our bodies have a lot of good bacteria which we need because they help us to function especially our digesive sytem. When the bad ones come and attack us we are able to kill them off with antibiotics but if we need to give the baddies a real pasting to get rid of them the poor old goodies get cleared out as well.

The good bacteria in your mouth help to keep it a nasty place for things llike thrush which is a fungus so antibiotics does not kill it.. so it can mulitply and give you a sore mouth.,

There are two things you can do. One is get medication to get rid of the thrush and then replenish your good bacteria. The good bacteria who live in your gut and help you digest your food often get killed off by anti biotics as well which is why a lot of people get diarheoa after a long course . Good bacteria are good. They come in some foods like LIVE yoghurt and you can get them as supplements from your chemist. Some are effective and some are fads so if you have a chemist you can trust take their advice what to buy.

If I have to take antibiotics I also eat yoghurt at the same time which may help to stop a complete wipeout of the goodies.I am sure there is someone on here who has more experience of which works test than I have

Like people have suggested you should see/ask your GP antibiotics not only kill the bad bacteria they also destroy the good/friendly bacteria thus leaving you vulnerable to other/more infection, have you tried boosting your immune system and good bacteria to aid your recovery?

Best wishes

Hi vix 19,

I fully support the advice that you have been given, it is quite possible that you have oral thrush and a visit to your GP to get some medication such as Nystatin drops or mouthwash can usually sort this out.

Let us know how you get on.

Best wishes

Hi vixs19,

I think you've probably managed to diagnose yourself, as this sort of soreness is definitely an after effect of antibiotics that seems to affect quite a lot of people. The antibiotics kill off all the friendly bacteria in our mouths along with all the bad ones, and in doing so allows thrush (which is a fungal infection) to thrive.

One of the best self-helps is plain yogurt which is soothing as well as effective, and if you can't bear to eat the stuff, then hold it in your mouth for a while and spit it out. (Don't use sugary, flavoured yoghurt as it's not effective.) Repeat frequently through the day. And it's ok to take a couple of one of the usual over-the-counter pain killers prior to trying to eat. Eat foods no hotter than warm till it feels better.

If that doesn't work, how about asking your pharmacist for advice as there are several mouth washes etc., available which help and don't need a prescription.

Of course if this goes on for longer than a few days, you should consult your GP surgery, but generally that's not really necessary.

Very best wishes.
