Need recovery from anxiety and depression

I'm 68 and have suffered a lifetime of chronic anxiety and depression - mirroring my father. I have had periods without it, notably when my children were young. The medication doesn't work anymore and I need to change or increase it. I am fortunate to have a loyal wife, 2 grown up children. But they don't know what to say to me. Bad at the moment.

Hi Boating 2,

Welcome to our Care Community. I see that you have just joined us.

I'm so sorry to hear of your struggle with depression and anxiety, but glad that you have a supportive family to help you. I think you may need more specialised help than we are able to give you here, so I hope you won't mind, but I've referred your post to our administrators who might be able to point you in the direction of more specialised help.

Very best wishes.

Anxiety and depression is something I have suffered with for most of my life and it does'nt get any easier, but I do make myself shake down and put on a good show as I will not let anyone know what I go through,or for them to be affected.

The ball is in our own court and we either sink or swim.

Luckily I do have a zany sense of humour and laughing is such a tonic to lift our moods.

I have also had problems with anxiety and depression all my life. Not due to genetics but due to a very unhappy childhood. I am 62 now and have my mother living with me which has affected my health and well-being terribly. I have recently had counselling through my local Steps to Wellbeing which was very helpful. Have also spoken to the Social Prescribing Service to get some information about support groups. You may have these in your area too so worth a try. Good Luck.

I have been struggling with anxiety and depression since I went on full time disability in January 2018. I try to be away from the people and places that remind me of who I used to be

But my amazing family will go to any lengths necessary to pull me back out of my head, and into my life , once again!! I know it is difficult to not feel extremely guilty for your impact on your family... But let me share something my 21 year old said to me just the other day... "Mom, we all understand that you are going through a lot of tough stuff right now, but can you please trust us to be the people you raised us to be. You taught us about compassion, and forgiveness, and loyalty. Sooo, no matter where you go to try and hide from us... Just know that you taught us never to give up on anything, or anyone, and that imcludes you!"

She spoke with such reserve and poise, I couldn't believe it. Well.. yes, I could (because she is correct). I have found that it usually is one of out children who are able to pull me out of my deepest, darkest places. I constantly feel bad that they have to do it at all.... But it is beautiful to watch, and listen, to them in action.

I sincerely hope that you are having a better day.
