Do you have experince of taking 'Cipro' (ciprofloxacin)?

Hi friends

I have a pseudomonas infection making me feel very unwell. My specialist wants me to take 'Cipro' (ciprofloxacin) tablets. The side-effects sound frightening - especially for a 72 year old. Can you tell me your experiences of taking this medication. The dose my specialist recommnds is 750mg twice a day for two weeks. I know some people take only 500mg and only for one week.

It's so valuable to have the experience and advice of fellow bronchectasis sufferers.

Hi Ozzie

I’ve had to take cipro for psuedomonas

First time it gave me terrible acid reflux so last time I took lanzoprazole for the duration and beyond / Made sure I took the tabs after food and I also take a daily probiotic .. which helps replenish all the gut bacteria that gets wiped out with abx

Hope you get better soon x

Thanks Phill1. That’s reassuring. I am sick now so I will try Cipro. I am also considering nebulised colomycin later to keep my pseudomonas under control. Warm regards Ozzie3

Hi Ozzie.I have taken 500gm 2x daily for 9 days. Stopped because of muscle pain/spasms. I was scared of damaging tendons. My friend who is 71 has just finished a 2week course, without any side effects & is much better.

I Seem to always have pseudo now, produce loads of mucus but not really ill with it.

I am considering trying inhaled colomycin but still thinking about it. 🤔

I took cipro many times. They’re not pleasant I seem to remember them giving me stomach pains. They are the only oral antibiotic for pseudonymous. Eventually my pseudo became resistant to them and kept coming back. Because I’m immunocompromised I had two weeks of iv antibiotics before commencing nebulised colomycin. Colomycin is only there to keep the numbers down and won’t kill it dead. BTW the protocol for any antibiotic for someone with Bronchiectasis is two week course. Good luck I hope you can take them without too much trouble.

I’m not a great fan of Cipro. The last time I took it I got tendinitis.

That’s no good. Can I ask which tendon and whether it eventually went away?

I got terribly ill with aspiration pneumonia after being in the ICU for a week. I was given a high dose of the medication and like you was scared of the side effects. But I was so sick I had too. I had no problems with it. I have since taken it 2 other times at lower doses and did not have a problem. I am younger then you. I am 61.

Hi Ozzie

I’ve taken the same dosage and duration of Cipro several times now for pseudomonas and it’s the only thing that seems to get rid of the infection even for a few months. It’s quite a persistent bug and I’ve found it comes back quickly if I have anything less than 750 and 10 days. Haven’t experienced any tendonitis thankfully but sometimes have a bit of heartburn so have to rely on gaviscon. Good luck I hope it works for you and you start to feel better soon, I hate having pseudomonas!

Hi Puffed_out, Thank you for letting me know your experience and for your good wishes. It's very reassuring to know of someone who has taken Cipro several times with no serious side effects. All the best, Ozzie
