Had another paracentesis yesterday and they drained 17.3 litres. They had to stop at this point though as I was in so much pain in the abdomen. They were happy to let me go home as in the next hour the pain reduced.
Today though I have pain in the lower abdomen which is making it difficult to walk, sit and sleep. Has anybody experienced anything like this before. Is it just all my organs settling down?
Paracetamol isnt even touching, but the hospital didnt prescribe anything stronger.

Hi ginger ,I'm sorry to hear of your pain issues ,I have had three drains done in the past , I was decompensated liver cirrhosis , I've not had any since 2014 , thing is I never really had any pain afterwards yes I had pain during the procedure and it was uncomfortable.
Have you been in touch with the department that did the drain? Are you under a liver hepatologist care at all ? If your In so much pain that isn't being controlled by pain killers then it needs investigating, just to make sure there's no infection
my son was drained about 12 litres every week and always had terrible stomach cramps after which usually lasted 2 days . Now he bus drained every two weeks -5-6 litres . He still get pains but they go away after a day . The nurses at the hospice here he goes tell him this is normal . I would mention to the nurses next time you go . Best wishes Carol
12 litres a session is what the specialists recommend otherwise you may have pain issues. What doseage of Spironolactone are you taking.40mg of furosemide combined with spiro is the norm
Also are you managing to do short walks and avoid salt as much as possible?
Paracetemol is the safest recommended pain killer
If no luck talk with your consultant re a small dose opiod.
My husband has bi monthly drains but they will never drain more than 10l or for more than 6 hours. We were told by two hospitals that these are the maximums in the UK and that severe pain is rare but I don't know if this is correct. His last drain was the first where he was in awful pain when it went in and he had pain and swelling post drain to the point where he was readmitted and put on thiamine and saline drips which seemed to help. Noone knew why this had happened but the drain had been in for 7 hours, so longer than recommended and he had had a UTI and reduced kidney function this time. I think you should get yourself checked out just in case and if all is okay, request a stronger painkiller.
so sorry that happened to you. I had one or two drains where I asked them to stop as I was uncomfortable. Do they do an ultrasound before they put the drain in? I had many drains pre transplant and they always on the left hand side as there is nothing on the lhs they can damage. The drain limit in my hospital was 14 litres as I was told this was the UK guideline. I think you need to get back in touch with them as you could have picked up an infection. I hope you feel better soon🫂
I was drained of 8L only today and currently have abdominal pain. I have experienced this before but it has only lasted a day or two. Something that seems to happen during paracentesis is terrible, terrible leg cramps which go on, on and off for an hour or two. I was sent away with antibiotics today as analysis of the fluid showed a slight problem with white blood cells.
I urge you to seek help if your pain continues to be so bad that it interrupts your sleep. 17.3L is an awful lot thought and I imagine your organs have been rattled around a lot.
