I am quite annoyed with how things have been going recently. I had to do various tests before they would operate. Well, the people who carried out these tests said I did okay, but the next thing I knew the liver physiotherapist said I had failed the tests which I was not happy to hear. The tests I had were my pre-op which went fine as far as they were concerned, and the LFT (Liver Function Test) I failed. The liver nurse where I live was quite sympathetic and would put my concerns to the MDT (Multi-Disciplinary Team). The nurse phoned me today to say that the consultant I am under will phone me ad-hoc either today or tomorrow. As you can see, I am very concerned about this.
What level of fitness do you need to be at for the operation to go ahead, I am 72 years of age and have various medical conditions. Can someone please help me with this?

I am sorry that you have had this news, hopefully when you speak to your consultant they can explain what their latest thinking is.
From reading the Cancer Research page regarding liver surgery (I had a liver resection 8 weeks ago, so I have naturally read everything that I could before my operation), I think that if your liver function tests arent great, they worry that when the section of liver has been removed along with the tumour, the remaining section of liver will struggle to repair itself.
I hope that you get some answers soon and can move forward with your treatment plan.
Hi Mick, with my parents I found it helpful to ask the doctor what are the risks and what are the benefits of the operation so that my parents could decide whether they wanted the op.
My Dad had a liver resdection but it didn’t get all of the tumour and he died some months later. He spent that time recovering from a major op. He could have had a better quality of life without it. But he wanted to try everything in the hope it would work.
Mum decided not to have a transplant because the risk of dying on the table was high and she chose to be with us for a little bit longer knowing it wouldn’t be years.
Others have the op and live for years after with a good quality of life.
Write a long list of questions for your call with the doctor and don’t feel rushed. You need to understand what the situation is and why they are saying whatever they say.
It’s a really tough situation you are in. I hope you get the answers and outcome you want.
I had a phone call regarding my liver cancer from my consultant. My physical test I failed on, and the best course of action is to have radiotherapy. I have agreed to this, has anyone else met with this and what is radiotherapy like?
If you would also find it useful to talk things over, our nurse-led helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm on 0800 652 7330 (excluding bank holidays).
