Diagnosed with cirrhosis in2022 from hepatitis C. Got treatment for the hepatitis and cured. Now it’s every 6 months of scans and bloodwork with is always said to be stable. This month the scan showed severe enlarged spleen most likely due to increased portal hypertension. Went from 1 to1.3cm. Still the message from hepatology was scan is stable. Is that common not to be concerned about my spleen being enlarged. Just wondering if anyone had this experience. Thanks!

An enlarged spleen is pretty much par for the course in cirrhosis with portal hypertension and they generally don't do anything about it. I think your quoted sizes seem quite small - my hubbies at its largest was 19.5cm.

The 1-1.3cm was the portal hypertension increase.

Ah, right. My hubby never got told any measurement for his portal hypertension - only comments on enlarged spleen including its size.

The spleen has an index of 1392

That's another measurement we were never party too, literally all his ultrasounds commented on what I guess was the length of the spleen but as I say they generally don't do anything about it - just advise against contact sports to avoid risk of rupture.

Found online:- " Splenomegaly is a common nonspecific manifestation of many disorders. The most common cause is portal hypertension, often associated with liver cirrhosis. Different imaging modalities can be used to confirm splenomegaly and to search for extrasplenic manifestations of disease, providing clues to the correct cause. Imaging may detect complications, including splenic rupture and infarction. The upper limit is defined as 15 cm length (craniocaudal), 10 cm width (laterolateral) and 6 cm depth (anteroposterior). The ‘splenic index’, which is the product of the width, depth and length of the spleen, has also been proposed as an indicator for evaluating splenic size. The normal range is 160–440 cm³."

Thank you for your response! Also the doctors never mention diet but I read a lot that is important. Will diet help lower the portal hypertension in ur experience?
