How serious is this?

hoping this group can help. My husband was diagnosed with cirrhosis a year ago after 10 years of heavy drinking and two internal bleeds. He has varricies and gets checked very 6 months by a gastroenterologist. He has regular blood tests at the GP which he is told are ‘ok’ but I’m confused that the NHS doesn’t seem to be doing anything else??? He takes that as ‘it’s obviously not that bad’ and he’s generally ok…he has spider veins and gets bad itching. No swelling of the abdomen. I just wonder if we are treating this as seriously as we should and what I should he pushing for??? He hates me sticking my nose in. He doesn’t drink after a period of rehab but his diet isn’t great. I’m such an organiser and worrier so any advice I give gets labelled as ‘ me being too dramatic’. I really would appreciate people’s experience as I think the NHS seems pretty relaxed but I fear we are waiting for a bigger shock!?

Six monthly bloods, scans and regular endoscopy is the norm for monitoring cirrhosis with yourselves keeping an eye out for changes in between. If you or he feel you need to get help with his nutrition then ask about seeing a dietitian.

The key thing is to keep sober, eat a good, healthy balanced diet (little and often is a good way to eat with cirrhosis), exercise and keep mentally and physically well.

Don't obsess on it but do make yourself aware of 'red flag symptoms' which can become a medical emergency. BLT page has details:- britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

Katie (wife and carer for hubby - 12+ years into life with liver disease - now recently transplanted).
