Do you have cirrhosis (or care for someone who does) and want to help prioritise what research is done in the UK?

The British Liver Trust is working with UK CLIF Network and supported by the James Lind Alliance on a project called the Liver Cirrhosis James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership (JLA PSP). The group includes patients, carers, and health professionals with expertise in liver cirrhosis.

Why is this project needed?

Liver cirrhosis is the name for the advanced stage of liver disease. While many people with liver cirrhosis can lead a normal life, it can be a serious condition. Cases of liver disease are increasing in the UK and although a lot of research is being done, we have not developed a new treatment for liver cirrhosis in the last 20 years. Research is important for us to understand more about liver cirrhosis and to improve the lives of people living with this.

The aim of the project is to identify and prioritise the unanswered questions about liver cirrhosis that are important to patients, carers and the professionals who look after them. More information about the JLA is available here: jla.nihr.ac.uk/about-the-ja...

Can I take part?

Yes, if you are over 18 years old, live in the UK, and have either a diagnosis of cirrhosis or care for someone who does. You don’t need any previous experience of research.

What will I be doing?

We are looking for members to be part of the Steering Group for the project, to help identify and prioritise research questions from both patient and professional perspectives for liver cirrhosis.

You would be involved in 5 or 6 meetings between July 2024 and February 2025. These are usually Zoom meetings online lasting no longer than an hour and a half, but one or two may be in-person. The group plans and directs the gathering of unanswered questions from people, and prioritising these with input from a wide group of patients, carers, and professionals.

The next online meeting is on Tuesday 23 July, from 1pm to 2.30 pm. There will then be a break in August, with the next meeting in September.

I am interested, what should I do now?

Please email research@britishlivertrust.org.uk to register your interest or for more information.

Thank you 🙏
