Research involvement opportunity

Hi there

I am a doctor specialising in Public Health and currently doing research at the University of Southampton. My research will look at the different causes of alcoholic liver disease and fatty liver disease and how they interact with each other. I will also be looking at who is at risk of these diseases. I will also be looking at the way patients with liver disease are cared for within the healthcare system. For example being referred to see a hospital doctor by your GP.

I am very keen to involve patients, carers or anyone else with an interest in liver disease in my work. If you would be interested in becoming part of a group who will help me to shape my research and make sure that it is helpful to both patients, carers and doctors, please get in touch. You can contribute as little or as much time as you would like.

If you would like to know more or are interested in getting involved, please get in touch!

Thank you

Dr Kate Glyn-Owen

Thank you so much to everyone who has got in touch and expressed an interest in getting involved - I really appreciate your help.

I am preparing a document which explains exactly what I am doing, how you can be involved, what to expect and what the limitations of my research are. I will send this to each person who has expressed an interest, so that you can understand what is being done and decide whether you would like to be involved.

Thank you

Kate

I do not drink, have NASH Cirrhosis Child Pugh A, thrombocytopenia, portal hypertension, gall stones, etc .etc. and receive (wonderful) care at King's in London and make myself available to my consultant for any research programmes they are doing that they feel I am suitable. If I can help, please let me know.

Hi, I have recently been referred to a specialist following an ultra sound that detected fatty liver. (Alcohol consumption around 2 units per week).

If I can help with your research then feel free to let me know.

Dear Doctor Glyn-Owen,

There is a vast wealth of personal experiences on this site and as you have seen - so many are willing to support your research.

It would seem that your reply to every post is the same so can you clarify when you hope to begin your research and at what stage are people likely to receive your outlining document?

Yours truly,

Pear

Dear Pear

Thank you, yes of course. I have tried to reply to everyone who has sent me a personal message directly but I also wanted to post a general reply to keep people informed.

My research started in January and will continue over the next 3 years.

I didn't know if I would get any responses or interest from posting in this group, so I apologise for not having the document ready to go. I am writing it now and it should be ready by the end of this week but I want to make sure it has all the information in it that people need, in order to decide whether they want to take part. So I am just taking a bit of time to check it.

I hope that helps to clarify the situation. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Many thanks

Kate

hello there. afraid I am a newbe to this internet stuff so please excuse any mistakes! I would be interested in helping you with your research if I can be of any use, am all for anything that may help others especially as I have had a dreadful time with the medical profession re information, advice ect. ( no idea where the red line is coming from !) I gave up drinking Christmas and very ill ever since to the point of not caring if I woke up or not. I have serious cirrhosis, fatty swollen liver and to add to my joys discovered I have hep c, (the only time I cauld have contracted the virus was 25years ago). I have just started treatment for the hep and am a week in of a 12wk course. I have had to buy a computer to research the drugs I am on and information such as diet, and to learn all I can from sites such as this and the advice of others in the same boat. If not suitable for your research myself I wish you all the best and good luck for the future.

Dear Tillycindy

I'm so sorry you've had such a difficult time and I really hope that you can find the support you need. It is always disappointing to hear that the medical profession has let someone down, I am sorry.

I will send you a detailed information sheet about my research as soon as it is ready (hopefully end of this week) and then you can decide if you would like to take part. I'm sorry I can't help you directly but as you say, hopefully we can change things for others in the future :)

Many thanks

Kate

Hi everyone

I just wanted to keep you updated. I am waiting for confirmation from my resesarch sponsor of the budget for this - for example what I will be able to pay you back for time spent, travel expenses, carer expenses as a result of your helping me.

As soon as i have that information I will post the project information pack here, so that you can look and decide if you are still interested.

If you would like me to send you the information pack directly by email, please message me on the private messaging system on this site with your email address.

Thank you all so much for your patience, I am sorry for the delay.
