Gilbert's syndrome

been told I have Gilbert's syndrome, can this be the reasoning of the slight yellowing of my eyes? The dr said my levels aren't high enough to cause jaundice but my eyes are definitely a little bit yellow? In certain lights they aren't but say I take a photo on my camera with flash on it darkens them a bit and they are yellow if that makes any sense! Xxx

Yes it can be the reason. When I had bilirubin level around 2,8-3,5 mg/dL (48-60 µmol/L) my eyes were slightly yellow but it was difficult to see without looking for this. The tricky part is that when you have Gilbert's syndrome, the bilirubin level is changing (stress, alcohol, fasting, stress) in fact sometimes it can be within normal range (but I think not often).

Please relax if you have Gilbert's syndrome, you do not have to check your bilirubin level or eyes on your own (unless your doctor orders it). Personally I do not see any doctors regarding my

Gilbert's syndrome.

Thank you for the reply I really appreciate it! I think it's made me paranoid with the yellowing but in reality it's not gotten any worse since I first noticed it so it could very well be that it's always been there and I've never paid it any attention! My level is 32 u/mol and im the only one that can notice it literally everyone else thinks im crazy! Im having my levels checked again in a couple of weeks just to make sure its all consistent with Gilbert's syndrome but then the dr said after that if the tests confirm constantly high bilirubin no more blood tests as it will always fluctuate

Generally females have lower level of bilirubin. It is also applied to those with Gilbert's syndrome. After all you are more lucky than me 😀

Fingers crossed for less yellow for both of us!

Thank you but to be honest is not any problem for me. What is maybe weird Gilbert's syndrome has some scientific proved benefits for your health. The only drawback is you that you have to watch out for some specific medicines (statins for example and others). Ok also gallbladder might be a problem more often than in general population. That's basically all.

It seems pretty common although before now I had never heard of it! My only concern is I've read everywhere that direct bilirubin is normal in Gilbert's and mine is high? My bilirubin is 32u/mol and direct was 10, I guess I just need to trust my doctor and stop googling! Xx

Well the normal range of direct bilirubin depends on laboratory. But I found the information "direct bilirubin is always normal < 1 mg/dl (< 17,1 µmol/L)". You have 10 but not sure you provided valid unit.
