A recent fibroscan has shown my fatty liver has got worse within a year I’m really worried is there anything l can do to reverse it my nurse says I’m doing all l can. I think my diet is good l never eat fast food and always cook from scratch I’m 73 and also have PBC. I don’t drink alcohol and usually stick to water my weight is within normal range albeit high end of normal. I’m feeling so deflated today I’m active and go to the gym when l can. I just want to cry now

Fatty liver
What did your fibroscan reveal? - just that the CAP score was higher so fatty content of liver was increased. Remember there is no way the fibroscan takes readings from the same points in the liver each time so could be picking up a few more higher readings from different bits of the liver.
If the kPa (liver fibrosity reading) was ok and your bloods are ok then probably not a great deal more you can do about it, you are eating appropriately, exercising and doing all you can. I note from your posts on numerous other forums that you may be on medications for other issues - remember some of these too can potentially contribute to fatty liver.
Is your PBC being treated? Could that be contributing to the higher figures.
I really wouldn't let it get you down, continue what you are doing and live your best life.

I felt I had to reply as I too am 73 years old also with NAFLD first diagnosed in 2021. I also have underactive thyroid and osteoarthritis. Like you I gave up alcohol, though I was a very moderate drinker, finetuned my diet which was quite good anyway and tried to get more exercise. I was carrying a few extra pounds and lost some though still bmi 27. My 2 fibroscans which were 17 months apart showed slightly higher kPa but slightly lower CAP. I felt a bit deflated at the time but just felt I’d keep going doing what I was doing and enjoy my life as much as I can. When I was first diagnosed I saw a top liver specialist and he just told me to lose a bit of weight, not to drink alcohol and not to worry and I’ve tried to follow his advice. The main thing I’ve noticed is that I very rarely get the RUQ pain I used to get
You are doing all you can to address your health issues so carry on and feel positive. Take good care of yourself.
Thank you for your reply Corin l know at 73 l won’t have a perfect liver but the increase was a shock especially as l haven’t eaten or done anything different. I’m altering my diet a bit as like you l eat healthily anyway. My BMI is the higher end of healthy so l will try and bring it down to lower end of healthy. I’m finding myself getting a bit obsessed with what I’m eating one part of me says don’t worry you are 73 and life is too short and another little voice is saying just eat what you want life is too short.
I know that feeling very well. I’m in Italy for a few days at the moment so am enjoying the food and not worrying about the diet. I’ll get back on track when I get home.
