I was diagnosed with fatty liver after a fibroscan with a 287 cap score and a 2.9 kpa. I then changed my diet (avoided carbs for lunch and dinner (salad, quorn chilli) and had porridge for breakfast and only sometimes had a treat at the weekend i. e a small pizza and a chocolate bar for example. Alongside this I have been doing 10 to 20 minutes of kettle bell workouts most days. I've lost a stone and a half and reduced (not stopped) my alcohol intake mostly I've stuck to around 20 to 25 units per week.
My latest fibroscan has said 5.3 kpa but 163 cap which suggests no fatty liver but the kpa has gone up but it is in the normal range. Can this be right when my last results were 2.9kpa and 287 cap?
I've had a pain in my RHS side for the last 11 months and am due to get an endcospy although the NHS says he doesn't think the pain is due to the liver.
I'm pretty confused.
Amy views?
Thanks in advance

I’m not at all sure if your scores but where is the pain. Had it reduced? Got worse? Is it same place all the time? Constant ? If you now have reversed fatty liver does this mean your liver is 100% normal.
I too have similar but no fibro scan as fib score did not warrant one but have the URQ pain all the time. Have had Us x3 abdominal wall US and CT scan all show nothing but fatty liver.
Hi Seoe, thanks for replying. Pain in on the right hand side under and around the rib and also goes into the back. It's been constant and diet and exercise don't seem to make any difference to the pain.
I finally have been told I will get an endcospy and am waiting for the appointment to come through, so I'm praying that will show something so it can get it resolved.
On the fibroscan scores, I'm just confused. It's only been 6 months since my first fibroscan to the second but I've been much healthier and I wonder if fatty liver can be reversed in that short amount of time?
Despite you exercising and eating fairly healthily, you are still drinking way over the recommended guidelines which are 14 units per week, which is still too high for someone who is looking to reduce your scores. The pizzas and chocolate won't help either... the kettlebell is great but try to increase your exercise by including daily brisk walks. Best wishes. L
Thank you so much for your reply. I'm still working through changing every part of my lifestyle and reducing alcohol. I just want to understand if it is possible for me to have had fatty liver but now it has gone due (as the reduced cap score suggests) to weight loss and a much healthier diet. For context I was drinking daily before and eating a lot of carbs, chocolate and crisps and not exercising but have changed that around (drinking is still a work in progress but much reduced).
You are definately heading in the right direction. Just go that step further and keep it up. Well done. All the best. Laura
As Positive has already pointed out. Alcohol is definitely the worst thing and in the battle against fatty liver is the first thing we should stop.
The fact that you have made such a great effort to change your life is wonderful, the diet and exercise are all excellent, again as Laura (positive001) has suggested, cardio-vascular, walking briskly, or swimming, or jogging... anything that gets our lungs and heart working, is a better way. I'm so lazy, I really have to give myself reasons to walk to the town, but luckily my job keeps me active (and exhausted but I'm grateful for that).
Life without a treat? well what is life without a small treat. But I tend to stick to "free from" treats, biscuits that are free from sugar, gluten etc... I'd rather have a few biscuits with a cup of tea 3 times a day on a Saturday instead of one small bar of chocolate, that way it feels like more treats, even though they are healthier, they taste just as delicious 😊.
Your pain might not be anything to do with your liver, but it does not mean the alcohol is not a factor, you are doing so well, but if you can summon the extra strength needed to stop drinking altogether, that would be so wonderful.
Well a lot of doctors say the liver doesn't feel pain, it's the Glisson Capsule that is stretched from fatty liver that causes pain (if it's due to liver). If you reversed your fatty liver based on those fibroscan results, you very well might have pain from something other than your liver. Your fibroscan results are great, and keep in mind that slight differences in results are common just like with any other test. You're drinking above the guidelines and that's up to you, but I would personally take a year off from anything that irritates the liver just to be on the safe side, since you have been diagnosed with fatty liver in the recent past.
Did you ever get any answers? Im exactly like you, started at very similar cap and kpa, did everything by the book, no drink, healthy eating etc and then since then KPA has kept rising, it does not make any sense as if liver is getting worse despite cap coming down, mine is still to high.
Hi Ruggerhead, I spoke to my consultant and the results can vary. I've had another follow up scan for my own piece of mind and the results went down again on the KPA but slightly up on the cap (but still they're now not on the fatty liver side). I think it can bounce off your ribs and give different scores for the KPA and for the fat it can vary depending on how healthy/unhealthy you've been the months before. My main take away is if you're in the "healthy" range do not worry but try and monitor it from time to time if needed. If in the unhealthy range you should definitely monitor it and keep up the healthy changes that you have made. I've changed my lifestyle quite a bit to reverse the fat but am lucky I could do this and don't seem to have automoimmune disorders etc. I still have unexplained pain on the RHS that they're trying to work out. Anyway, hope that you're okay!
