Hepatology is liver specialists.

Why would you go there if you are already with liver Dr at the other hospital

Are you definitely already under a liver specialist and not a gastroenterologist? There are generally more gastro's out there than liver specialists. It might be that either your current doctor has moved on or else they feel you need more specialist care.

I go to a gastroenterology clinic and my Dr is a liver specialist

They must obviously think you need to be seen in a hepatology department. Is your current consultant listed as a hepatologist? There are three sort of grades of hospital doctor a liver patient might see - a pure gastroenterologist (everything from mouth hole to a*se hole), a gastroenterologist with a liver specialism (they spend a certain % of their time dedicated to liver and biliary system so have a 'qualified interest' in the liver) and then there are hepatologists who are 100% liver and are often based in the bigger liver units with more specialism.

To be honest i'd just be pleased you are getting to see a consultant at all in the current climate - hubby hasn't seen his local one (Gastro) since January 2020 and we've now learned he retired in February this year and hasn't been replaced. A locum? has take over the gastro unit but is only seeing new patients and none of the previous specialists 'historic patients' so folks like my hubby are left without a doctor at all at present. My hubby is somewhat lucky in that he has at least seen his gastro with liver specialism at Edinburgh a couple of times.

Don't know love.thats bad about the Dr hope you get sorted

I have a gastroenterologist with a liver specialism, principally because I have other gastro issues related to gallbladder, pancreatic enzymes and varies, etc, and a hepatologist (Professor) who takes a very focussed view on the six-monthly liver function tests and ultrasounds.

It's not uncommon to have two doctors - where there is availability.

There have been a lot of changes of locations of services in Liverpool as the new hospital has finally opened. It may just be that things are being shuffled around as a result. The best thing to do is ring the secretary/number on the letter and ask them to explain what’s happening. Hepatology is a specialist liver clinic so that’s good.
