In Shock!

Hi all

Around a year ago I was diagnosed, via a fibroscan with a score of 20, as my gastro consultant said, borderline cirrhosis. I’ve never been happy with the lack of anything I have received from him so I pushed for a referral to Kings College. I ended up there yesterday and they did a second fibroscan. The lovely consultant rang me last night as she knew I was worried and said it’s come back completely normal, a score of 5?! I’m in complete shock as I’ve obviously been going out of my mind a little. She said it can be very user dependent on the day.

Now however instead of feeling relieved I just feel that I almost don’t know which one to believe. Part of me is still worried it’s all going on but just didn’t get picked up yesterday.

Thank you for listening in advance.

hi , so I would say get your blood tested for ALT and GGT . These are liver enzymes which would allow you see how your liver is actually functioning.

If these are high - the. I would suggest your first fibroscan is correct . If they are normal - I would ignore first scan. Either way it’s good to try to get more exercise, eat less bad food and take care of yourself more. Hope this helps re assure you .

ALT and GGT are both inflammation markers, they will indicate if there is ongoing inflammation but having normal ALT or GGT doesn't rule out potential more advanced liver disease. My hubby has cirrhosis (diagnosed 11 years now), he has no ongoing inflammation so his ALT and GGT are normal.

Plus, you say if ALT and GGT high that points to fibroscan being accurate - potentially not. In cases were fibroscan is carried out when there is inflammation present it can give a false high reading for kPa as it can't determine the difference between inflamed tissue and actual fibrous tissue.

We have to be careful making sweeping statements re blood and scans rven when trying to be supportive.

Thank you both of you for your replies. My bloods were apparently all really good so I just don’t know what to think. I’m so scared of relaxing a bit and thinking I’m more ok then I actually am.

Absolutely go with the lower reading I’d say. ☺️👍
