inconclusive liver ultrasound

does anyone know what this means ?

I phoned the liver clinic to see if there was any result and the consultant secretary said a letter was waiting to be signed off saying that the left side of my liver was inconclusive and a further type of scan was being ordered.

I asked her if the consultant could call me to explain and she said she would ask but he didn’t.

I’m left wondering if they have found something and that’s inconclusive or if the scan couldn’t be read ? The radiologist was very thorough so I can’t imagine the scan was poor quality ?

Has anyone had a similar report and might be able to shed light ?

I went for ultrasound but my abdomen was full of gas couldn't get a clear picture I got a letter to say the ultrasound pictures where sub optimal so I had to go for a ct scan its happened to me a couple of times

I had my 6 months routine ultrasound for HCC and returned with inadequate readings due to me being overweight. I was sent for MRI and found no features of concern. MRI is more accurate but also more cost affective. Ask your Doctor about MRI option, this could give you better answers.

thanks for the replies. I’ll post more details when I get them but I’m concerned about the word inconclusive. It implies something is found that can’t be explained. I’m not sure they would have used that word if the scans were just too bad.

Taking by your CAP score I assume your "chubby".

My ultrasounds often reported that part of my liver could not be seen clearly and your assumption that the radiographer was thorough could also indicate it took longer and the probe was moved around more because they could not get a clear image.

Because of this my consultant switched to ordering MRI scans.

Inconclusive is (probably) just a way of saying they can't get a clear enough image to rule out problems.

The term to be concerned about is "lesion" or "shadow".

It sounds like your going in the washing machine😂.

If your worried ask to be switched to regular MRI instead of ultrasound.

spoke to the consultant on Friday who advised they had found a very small lesion and that was actually the reason for the new scan. Only 7mm and he was comfortable that even if it was malignant it would be treatable. He said the chance of that was very low but the next scan would help confirm.

hahah. Chubby is probably accurate. 😃 Yeah that’s exactly it. Inconclusive seems to be used when a lesion can’t be categorised correctly. It’s the waiting and chasing that is exhausting. Along with just simply not knowing.

spoke to the secretary again and she confirmed that they just couldn’t see the left side of my liver properly on the scan so are ordering a different scan. Panic over for now.
