Understanding kpa

Hi all, Just a quick question what is kpa?? My 1st appointment at the hospital was February where I had a fibroscan the consultant told me it was 17.4 kpa?? at the time I wasn't taking it all in..I haven't seen him since but he organised a liver biopsy ( which I had 2 weeks ago) just waiting to hear back what diagnosis my liver is..

He did say I have NAFLD..due to medication, high blood pressure and high cholesterol and he drew 5 livers and from 1 to 5 he circled 4 and 5 and said it was badly scared ...I'm having a MRI scan on Monday.. but I won't be seeing the consultant that day..So I still won't know what kpa means.

Since February I have changed my diet and cut out sugars/salt and I haven't had one piece of chocolate since ( bloody agony) I've started to exercise, I keep getting the feeling of a hot stabbing pain in my liver which is more often than not.

The thing is more than likely all of you didn't know you had anything wrong with your liver.. it was only by chance I had blood tests ( for something else) that it showed a low white blood cells and its gone from there. I must of had these stabbing pains before but took no notice as I didn't know it was my liver. .

Even though its badly scarred can it repair itself??

kPa is the stiffness of the liver, measured in kilopascals. Increasing kPa can accurately indicate the degree of liver fibrosis, but inflammation of the liver also leads to an increase in kPa, so it is usually recommended to check LFT before fibroscan or elastography for correct interpretation. An increase in ALT levels can lead to a false positive increase in kPa on liver fibroscan.

Can a elevated ferritin level as well increase liver stifness KPA

An elevated level of ferritin in the blood typically does not directly affect the measurement of liver stiffness in elastography or liver fibroscan.

However, an elevated ferritin level can be associated with various diseases, including liver-related conditions such as hemochromatosis, which can impact the liver's state. Therefore, it's important to pay attention to symptoms and undergo further evaluation if there are suspicions of liver issues. Consulting with a healthcare professional will help determine next steps and the need for additional tests.

I have my ferritin checked with all my labs as I think it’s a important measure to watch as well.
