Sweet tooth

A light-hearted post. Has anyone developed a sweet tooth post diagnosis. I would never eat sweets, chocolate or cakes before, but since I'm all over them. Maybe it's a substitute for the sugar I had in alcohol.

Yes I think it’s exactly that

Hi - yes that seems very likely. I did the same and those cravings seemed to pass but not for over a year. Not the best situation given the downsides to too much sugar! I also found myself feeling like I had sudden low blood sugar around lunchtime - nearly always between 12 and 12.30. The hepatologist was quite concerned about it but my blood HbA1c levels have always appeared as normal. She suggested increasing dairy-based protein (or a vegan equivalent) in my diet to balance things and that worked for a while but there are still occasional days when I crave sweet stuff. Not sure how much is the body needing the chemicals (the liver is involved in some elements of sugar storage and release) and how much is needing a solitary treat to deal with life. Keep going!

my husband did I couldn’t keep up with his craving for sugar snd he never ate sweets, chocolate, cake etc before he put on so much weight then we got told. Not to diet. Anyway he had his first knee replacement op and he couldn’t eat the hospital food and as his wound got infected he was in got weeks he lost tons of weight very rapidly to no ill effect and now back to his normal weight again. I used to say he was like a fly drawn to sugar

Oh my....I have exactly the same problem!! I've read on here that sugar is hard on the liver so I try to satisfy my insatiable sweet tooth by sucking tic tacs and loads of sugar free chewing gum. I never ever had a sweet tooth at all before diagnosis and abstinence from alcohol, I would have the cheese option over a dessert always. Tic tacs are really tiny and they have really helped me, good luck xEmma x

Thanks. İt's not just me then. When I had my last hospital review I got told off for not taking the 3 renapro shots each day and told to eat biscuits or cake or something like that before bed to prevent muscle wastage. All in moderation though, need to keep it in check.

That happens a lot with people who use to drink alcohol and then quit. After I quit drinking over 2 years ago I developed a massive craving for sweets. Historically I never had a craving for sweets. There is some science behind it but I can’t remember what it is. Now when I eat pineapple I break out in Dance mode. 😂 it’s crazy how great it tastes.

I definitely found this too. I used to buy ice cream or cookies for my son's lunch and husband to undoubtedly nab. But the last year and a half I buy extra in case I need a cookie myself. Have to definitely be more mindful of my weight!
