Hello there. I would advice him to speak to his consultant and also tell the dentist about his liver disease and his low platelets. I remember after my transplant I had my tooth extracted and the dentist was worried incase my clotting factor wasn't good because I had an infection. Luckily because I had also gone to GP as I had infection symptoms, I had a blood test. The clotting factor was OK.

However I strongly advice you to speak to at least the coordinator? I'm not sure if you have one before a transplant.

I hope someone else will help.

Take care

His dentist should automatically refer him to hospital I had to have teeth out 4 weeks ago and I had to go to hospital due to low platelets. They will give your partner a boost of platelets and clotting through transfusion it's the safest place to have it done just in case 😁

Hi there. I agree with everyone else. Speak to your consultant first. For my teeth I had to have mine done via the specialists at my hospital. This was post transplant. I also have low platlettes. I was just in the hospital for that among other issues. I not only had to get platlettes transfusions prior to every proceedure, I also had to get injections separately to build up a certain part of the cell. I'm also on a high dose of injection blood thinners daily! Whew! Lol. So they might need to do several things.

But I do know you want to get his teeth fixed as the risk of infection because of bad teeth is not good.

Everybody is different, so irs best to check!

Cheering you both on!

yes; he will have to have it done at a dental hospital and platelets will need to be at the ready; needs co-ordinating between liver specialist/ dental hospital/ blood specialist.

Hi, I suffer with cirhossis and poor clotting of blood and low platelets and 18 months ago I had to have 6 teeth out under a local, not General. The dentist was aware of my liver cirhossis and had my most recent blood results. I was supposed to be kept in for the night in case. I had them out, was sent home bleeding and ended up in another hospital with shock and heart problems and they gave me antibiotics. I complained to my dentist that the whole purpose of travelling from Wales to England was because I was promised a bed which I didn't get. If I were you, take the advice from the other members, insist on a overnight bed in case of shock and bleeding.

Good luck

Julie xx

I can only tell you about Terrys' experience. He lost a filling while in hospital & had to go to our regular dentist to have it removed. As long as you take all the latest blood counts with you then the dentist will decide whether or not it's safe to carry on with removal. I have to say it was some time ago but the dentist decided it was safe to extract the tooth rather than risk infection. All turned out fine. Hope this helps. xx
